Simple Shoes

simple shoes

My dad loves shoes. He can’t even keep track of how many pairs of shoes he owns, definitely more pairs than what’s in my closet. A while ago, he purchased this pair of Simple shoes. It’s a kit to make your own shoes. The shoe on the left is the final product. The pieces to the right of that are parts.

Although the kit came with instructions on a DVD, my dad wasn’t able to match up the holes. So he asked me for assistance.

Super comfortable and environmentally friendly shoes. Visit Simple’s shoes website to learn more about it.

Sketching a Cake

In Food on July 29, 2009 at 9:00 am

Our Kaye is turning 3 at the beginning of August. She has been requesting a pink Disney princess cake. She saw one at the grocery store and wanted one. I’m not purchasing the one from the store because it’s $60 for little cake and lots of plastic decoration. Plus I’m not a big fan of store bought cake. Too much frosting for my taste.

So I came up with an idea. For my birthday this year, I attempted an ice cream cake. It turned out gigantic, but delicious.

ice cream cake

Since Kaye is a pink princess, I will probably bake a strawberry cake, use vanilla ice cream as the middle layer and strawberry ice cream as the frosting. Then how about adding ice cream cones at each corner and use a cream cheese frosting to draw doors and so forth. Perhaps decorate it with Skittles or M&Ms? Any suggestions?

Working

My amazing hubby is working on my site while I’m working on putting together a tutorial for you. It’s a work in progress around here. Plus we’re getting ready to pack it up and head North for the weekend. Exciting times with some college buddies. Yay!

Ribbon Board

ribbon board

My parents gave me back an old cork bulletin board I had on my wall in my bedroom in high school. The cork was frail and I had written stuff all over the frame with a permanent marker. Not wanting to toss the board, I covered it with quilting padding and a cute fabric. Then I stapled ribbons crisscrossing over the front of the board. Finally, I used twisted pins for furniture to tighten the ribbons where it met and glued buttons to cover the twisted pins. A quick and simple makeover and now it is hanging in Kaye’s room.

magazines

A friend of mine, Emily, was cleaning out her craft supplies. She asked if I would be interested in taking any of it. Of course! I inherited a collection of patterns, even vintage patterns of children clothes. I also received sewing books and years worth of magazines- Sew News, Burda World of Fashion, and Threads. I’m excited to go through all the stuff. Thanks, Emily!

Lace On

In Crafts on July 22, 2009 at 9:00 am

I bought a dress from Target on clearance for $6. However, the dress was a bit too short for my liking. And come to find out, a dear friend of mine bought the same dress but a different color. To fix that, I whipstitched a lace trimming to the bottom while watching reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond. Love that show!

Learn From a Pro: National Geographic

In Learn from a Pro on July 21, 2009 at 9:00 am

There’s no hiding that I am an amateur when it comes to photography. I’m not completely delinquent as I have had experience working on the newspaper and yearbook staff in high school, taken a beginners college photography class, and worked briefly with a wedding photographer as the go-to girl. But now that I am graduating from a simple point and shoot camera to a DSLR, I checked out a book from the library that looked interested. National Geographic: The Ultimate Field Guide to Photography will teach anyone how to take a good photograph. And even if you are a decent photographer, it has chapters on advanced techniques, taking great pictures with a camera phone, digital darkroom, and archiving. I am loving this book!

My favorite summer treat… a bowl full of fresh fruits lightly tossed with a tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk. The best part was I bought farm fresh blueberries at $1 per pound at a local fundraiser.

New York Times published an interview with Carrie Sandoval in an article this Wednesday. Carrie is a professional photographer specializing in baby, especially newborn, photos. She has some of the most amazing work I have seen from a baby photographer. The article shared some of her photography tips for taking pictures of infants. It’s a must read. Friday's 5 at 5: My Craft Skills

In Friday's 5 at 5 on July 17, 2009 at 5:00 am

I’m starting a new tradition. I am a list maker. I thrive off lists. Therefore, each Friday I will post my list of 5 things at 5 a.m. or 5 p.m. I am actually not awake a 5 a.m. and am usually trying to get dinner going at 5 p.m. But that’s when I’ll schedule it to be published.

This week’s 5 at 5 is a list of craft skills I have…

  1. Framing. I worked at a bookstore’s art and framing department as a framer through my 4 years of college. I loved helping people pick out mats and frames for their artwork. I loved going to work being surrounded by art and creativity. It was one of my favorite jobs.
  2. Sewing. I am an amateur seamstress. I just picked up the skill in college when, due to shortage of budget, my dance group had to make our own dance costumes. My lines were horrible, but at least no one in the audience could tell.
  3. Crocheting. My mom has always crocheted but never taught more more than doing a long, straight line. Last year, while I was pregnant with my second, I wanted to crochet matching hats for my girls. I bought a book, Googled stitches, watched tutorials on YouTube, and taught myself how to do it.
  4. Penmanship. I have great penmanship. I am also good at coming up with fun letterings for projects.
  5. Cooking. Don’t call me chef, but I can follow a recipe well. We don’t eat out much, so I am in the kitchen 7 days a week.

Animal Series: Rabbits & Carrot

In Crafts on July 15, 2009 at 9:00 am

bunnies

This one turned out super cute. I love the little boy bunny in a super hero costume. Since I hand stitched all the animals in theses animal series using felt. The carrot has a zipper.

There is one more set to the series, baking bears in a cupcake. That is the hardest one and that’s why I haven’t finished it yet. Maybe one day I’ll get around to it.

Animal Series: Elephants & Peanut

Nice little zippered peanut to hold these circus elephants. Unlike the mice and cheese where the cheese were made out of felt, I sewed the peanut. Then easy blanket stitch for the elephants.

mice

My grandma made these for her grandchildren years ago. Many of them still have it saved for their children to play with. I got the patterns from her to make them for my kids. There are several different types… hence the series part of my title.

They work well because it comes contained. Great quiet toys for the car or church. My Kaye loves playing with them. Lately, she has been pretending the mice are Jaque and Gus from Cinderella.

Friday’s 5 at 5: Repeat 1

Jack Johnson

This was hard to narrow down, but here I go. 5 songs on my iPod that I can listen to over and over again…

  1. Bubble Toes
    by Jack Johnson.
  2. Oh
    by Dave Matthews.
  3. Read My Mind
    by The Killers.
  4. Center of Attention
    by Guster.
  5. Send Me On My Way
    by Rusted Root.

Wild Wild West

modeling skirts

I’m not the Western type of gal. So I wasn’t sure about making bandana skirts since the only thing I have used bandanas for was to blindfold in games. I thought I would give it a try since I found bandanas for 50 cents each. I think they turned out pretty cute and not too Western-ish. I used a white bed sheet from the thrift store as the trims. The only thing I forgot to do was prewash the bandanas. Oh well, they still turned out fine after I washed it. Kaye loves the yellow one and wears it all the time.

P.S. I got the idea from Vanessa’s blog. She has the cutest stuff.

Finally Decided

In Photography on July 8, 2009 at 9:00 am

After days of researching and shopping around online for a great deal, I finally decided on a camera. I looked at all the Canon Rebels and Nikon D series. When it came down to purchasing, it turned out to be quite the ordeal.

At first, I tried to purchase a Nikon D40, but the deal didn’t come through. Next, I ordered another Nikon D40 from another site. When I got the confirmation email, it said the camera was on backorder. I called to company to see when they expected it in and they had no idea. So I canceled the order and looked for yet another deal. I found an much better deal at a different site- it was the whole package with lens, memory card, tripod, camera bag, so on and so forth. When I Googled the site’s name for reviews, everyone gave it horrible reviews and had several complaints to the Better Business Bureau. Forget it.

I was just about to give up when I saw the best deal of all. Canon EOS Rebel T1i. I was just looking for a basic SLR camera to transition me from a point and shoot to SLR. But the deal made it irresistible. The T1i has HD video recording built into the camera.

I purchased a Canon Rebel T1i and a Canon PIXMA Pro9000 MkII Printer and qualified for a $400 rebate. Since we’re not interested in the printer, we’re going to sell it to help with the cost of the camera. Essentially, we would be getting a $900 camera for $450. Check in my Amazon store if you are interested.

This was the first time I designed my own logo. Coming with minimal design and drawing background, it only took me a day to come up with this idea and put it into Illustrator. What do you think?

I read the article, 2009 Logo Trends, that helped me come up with ideas and inspirations.

Crochet Hair Clips

crochet flower hair clips

Dipping my toes into crocheting, I learned I love crocheting cute flowers. It was so easy to make and only takes a few minutes… if it’s uninterrupted minutes. I attached the flowers onto alligator clips for my girlies. Then I made matching pink and white ones for Kaye and Elle’s matching Easter dresses back in April. Elle thinks they are great chew toys.

Researching

In Photography on July 1, 2009 at 10:29 am

I have been secretly coveting a SLR digital camera for a long time. I’ve been looking at them in the stores, researching them online, and envying of other bloggers’ better quality photos. Finally, yesterday a great deal popped up for a Nikon D40. Then Nathan sold some gadgets we had around the house to the point where we can get a $500 camera for about $150.

I spent my free time yesterday researching Nikon SLR cameras. Today, I’m going to look into Canon Rebels. I have used both brands of cameras before, but they were the older versions. I have a Canon Rebel film camera that is in mint condition, but it’s film. I haven’t touched it in years. So anyone with some digital camera advice or reviews, please leave me comments. Also, if anyone is interested in a film Canon Rebel, let me know.
