Learn from a Pro: Outside Magazine

While at my parents’ house the other day, my dad handed me the September issue of Outside Magazine. Have you seen it? It’s a must. It’s a special on photography and the artworks contained in the 132 pages were spectacular. I’m going to share some of the best photography advice from professional photographers from the “See It Their Way” article.

{photo by Paolo Marchesi}

{photo by Paolo Marchesi}

  • “GET DOWN! Never shoot from eye level unless you only want to get what people see every day. Drop to your knees or belly.” -Paolo Marchesi
  • “LONG LENSES SUCK. Like Robert Capa once said, ‘If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.’ I use two lenses—one normal, one wide. I get as close to my subjects as my camera’s focus will allow.” -Joshua Paul
  • “THINK DIAGONAL. The subjects in great photos rarely line up with the vertical or horizontal axis of the frame.” -Outside Magazine’s editors
  • “READY, FIRE, AIM. You don’t have to look through the viewfinder. Instead, try looking people in the eye, smile, and continue to shoot frames with your camera held surreptitiously at waist level. Your apparent cease-fire and eye contact will help put your subject at ease—at least until he hears your camera firing. Lowering your camera also changes the perspective of the photo.” -Jason Florio
  • “BE GOOD. Take beautiful photos and your audience will find you.” -Robert Maxwell
  • “STAY LOOSE. Antonin Kratochvil gave me this, and somehow it makes sense when he says it. If you try too hard, if you’re too uptight, the photos never seem to work. You’ve got to be like an athlete and react to what happens. That’s how you capture those moments of serendipity. It’s especially important in other countries. Maybe you’ve got culture shock, food poisoning, or something else. You’ve got to tolerate the differences and flow with things that you didn’t plan or expect. If you stay loose, it’s going to work out.” -Chris Anderson
  • “ANYONE CAN SHOOT CHAOS. But the most perceptive photographers can make compelling pictures out of uninteresting moments.” -Alex Tehrani

And one last tip about purchasing cameras… where you can also check out Outside’s article, “Sharp Shooters” for their list of top 10 cameras.

  • “Most amateurs obsess over image quality. Eight-megapixel images are generally sufficient for printed spreads in this magazine. If you just bought a camera, chances are you have more than ten. Most pictures, though, end up on the Web, and the ones that are printed are rarely enlarged beyond four-by-six. Worry more about the image you’re framing and less about your pixel count. And when you buy a camera, think about shutter lag, aperture control, and exposure compensation. Those things do matter.” -Jake Chessum

BTB Tip #6: Yard Sales

In Back to Basics on September 29, 2009 at 9:00 am

Planning on a fall cleaning and getting rid of some things? Do a yard sale. But plan the yard sale toward the beginning of the month as that’s when most people receive a paycheck and more willing to spend.

Fake Mustaches On a Stick Tutorial

In Tutorials on September 28, 2009 at 9:00 am

fake mustaches

I follow a few photography and wedding photography blogs. And I have seen photo booth photos using fake mustaches. What a fun idea that I must try. Searching online, I found fake mustaches within pretty reasonable price range. However, top it with the shipping and handling fee, it’s more than what I would like to pay for fake mustaches. How about some DIY ones. Probably a good idea for Halloween, too. Super simple and cheap.

Supplies:

  • paper
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • black felt (I used a large sheet of stiff felt)
  • glue gun
  • thin dowels (1/4″ or thinner)
  • black permanent marker

mustache patterns

1. Fold your paper in half lengthwise. Then sketch half a mustache. And cut them out.

black felt mustaches

2. Lay mustaches on your felt and trace each mustache pattern twice. I used a regular pencil.

3. Cut out the felt pieces.

black tip dowels

4. Color one end of the dowels with black permanent markers so it matches the felt.

mustache's first glue

5. Use the glue gun to glue the dowel to one side of the felt mustache. I like to have the stick at an angle so it doesn’t block the person’s face.

6. Use the glue gun to glue the second piece of felt to the first piece and dowel.

girl blocks

I saw this cleaver idea a while ago at Liz’s blog. It has been stuck in my head ever since. I loved the idea of such a personalized book. And while I was shopping the craft stores last week, I found wooden children’s blocks for 50 cents a set. Then, Liz announced a giveaway on her blog where she is giving away two Shutterfly books. I hope I win as I’m already working on my block books for Kaye and Elle. Go to her site to enter for your chance to win.

Baby Doll Shirt w/ Ruffles

In Crafts on September 24, 2009 at 9:00 am

I tried it and it didn’t work on me. I worked on repurposing a men’s dress shirt into a shirt for me. It turned out OK. The pictures are of the shirt I used as a rough draft. But since this style of shirt didn’t flatter my body, I’m not modeling it for you.  And I am not proceeding to make another one for the tutorial as previously planned. So I’m posting my rough draft in case this style of baby doll shirt works for you. If enough people are interested in making it, maybe I will do an actual photo tutorial later. Let me know.

repurposed shirt back repurp shirt

Remember, this was my very rough draft. I used an XL men’s dress shirt. This shirt is supposed to be long and hang below the rear. Cute to wear with skinny jeans.

  1. Cut off the collars and long sleeves.
  2. Cut the V neck to just right above a button. Hem the V neck.
  3. Make the arm holes smaller to be more fitting and add the sleeves. I gathered the sleeves a bit where it is attached the the rest of the shirt.
  4. Make casting at the end of the sleeve for the elastic.
  5. Measure elastic around your upper torso, just below the bust. Then zigzag stitch the elastic onto the shirt all the way around while pulling the elastic to fit the shirt so it will scrunch. Don’t sew elastic over the button front.

Dry Ice Season

UPS delivered a surprise package to our front door last Thursday. The box had this label on it…

pie and ice

What? A frozen pie? Oh yeah, I forgot I was signed up to do a survey on a new pie product. What a pleasant surprise, a free apple pie. Yum. To keep it frozen there was a brown paper sack inside filled with dry ice. Fun. An early Halloween.

Last week it came in the mail… 50 percent off coupon to a local thrift store. Yes, thrift store is supposed to be cheap and that’s why it’s even better when you have the 50 percent off coupon. The coupon is only good for today. So I met my mom there and we shopped the day away. Almost stopped by the rain, thunderstorm, flood combo we are having here. However, I was determined. Who cares if they shut down roads because the water was getting into people’s cars? I’ll just go another way.

And look at what I found…

vintage sheets

feathered hat

I haven’t decided what to do with those twin size vintage flat sheets yet. But the hat… well, I’m just looking for some fake mustaches then I’m setting up a photo booth. I also bought a Banana Republic white linen skirt – brand new, original price tag attached (retailed $68) – for $6. It was just my size, too. And a second white linen skirt from Chaps that was way cute. That one for $2.50. Not too bad. I have another 50 percent off coupon for next Monday. Hopefully it won’t be raining.

Friday’s 5 at 5: Childhood Foods

In Friday's 5 at 5 on September 18, 2009 at 5:00 am

I grew up on the island of O’ahu, Hawaii. Best childhood ever. Some foods I enjoyed as a child in Hawaii that normal kids don’t eat…

{image ukumillion}

{image ukumillion}

  1. Musubi. Ahh, spam, a basic food group in Hawaii. They sold musubi in front of the gym every morning in middle school. My husband, who has never been to Hawaii, doesn’t appreciate spam. However, Kaye loves it. That’s my girl.
  2. Shaved ice. Not just any shaved ice, but Matsumoto shaved ice. With the red beans (yes, red beans, but it’s not what you think) and the bright colored flavorings. You haven’t been to Hawaii until you tried Matsumoto shaved ice.
  3. Li hing mui. Wiki describes it as salty dried plum. Usually comes in the form of powder and added to just about anything. My childhood favorite would be gummy bears.
  4. Pani po po. Samoan coconut rolls. Coconut milk, sugar, and rolls. What’s not to love about it?
  5. Saimin. Or what mainlanders call Ramen noodles. But we didn’t cook it. We broke it up into little pieces and sprinkled the flavoring packet to it raw. Shook it up and ate it.

Here’s an idea. Introduce your children to childhood in Hawaii by making some of these.

BTB Tip #5: Notes

In Back to Basics on September 14, 2009 at 9:00 am

Don’t forget that pen and paper is still the best way to write a note. It will make the world of difference to your spouse, children, friend, family, or even teacher to receive a surprise note carefully hidden in their lunches, books, computer, bathroom mirror, desk, or even mailbox. Thank yous and I love yous are always appreciated. A great excuse to keep fun stationary around.

Friday’s 5 at 5: Bed Sheets

In Friday's 5 at 5 on September 11, 2009 at 5:00 am

Not only for beds. I found king size white, pink, and cream flat sheets at the thrift store for $1.50 each. I’ve used it for…

  1. Rough drafts. Drafting my own pattern doesn’t always work out the first time. So I rough draft it with the sheets to save making mistakes on fancy fabrics.
  2. Forts. Building forts with the girls. Great past times.
  3. Photo backgrounds. Made my own studio photography at home by pinning sheets up as the backdrop or lay it on a chair for little things.
  4. Trims. Remember the bandana skirts I made Kaye and Elle? The trims were from the white sheets.
  5. Parachutes. Forget about the expensive $80 parachutes. Make your own or just use plain sheets to play parachute with the kiddos.

If you leave it to the guys, they’ll make crafts like barrel monsters, DIY solar lamps, cannibalistic seed table, and a bike table. Dude Craft is a site that should inspire all the guys out there to be more crafty in their own way.

Friday’s 5 at 5: Love Fall

In Friday's 5 at 5 on September 4, 2009 at 5:00 am

fall

Why I love fall…

  1. The season of many colors. The drive to our house is covered with trees. I love driving that road this time of year, seeing the leaves change colors and watch it fall on the car as I zoom by.
  2. Less humidity. I live in a region of the U.S. where I swim in my own sweat in the summer. Fall is a nice change of atmosphere.
  3. Baking season. Crank up the oven, I love to bake this time of year. Nothing smells better than the aroma of home baked bread.
  4. Snuggling up to a warm cup of steamed milk and a good book. I haven’t been getting much reading done lately, book-wise. But this time of year, in the mist of the holiday crazies, I love to snuggle and read. My reading list is overflowing. I prefer steamed milk because I’m not a chocolate person, so no hot cocoa for me.
  5. Gratitude. A good time of year to remember the things I am grateful for in my life. The abundance of blessings in my life are priceless.

The Despairing Master Bedroom

In Home on September 3, 2009 at 9:00 am

Here is my plea in hopes of winning a contest at Inspired Room’s Fall Nesting. I’m an avid reader of Melissa’s website, Inspired Room, and she is giving away $200 gift cards to HomeGoods/TJ Maxx and I desperately need one to give our master bedroom a major makeover this fall. So please pick me.

HISTORY

Even before I got married, I promised myself that my master bedroom would be a relaxing haven where my husband and I can turn to each night. I have this dream of light blueish gray painted walls, lots of whites, and nature inspired decorations. Then we bought our house, three years ago this October, 2 months after Kaye was born. We had minimal furniture and absolutely no decorations. Over the last three years, we obtained a few IKEA furniture pieces and mostly hand-me-down stuff from friends and family.

Then life got crazy. Nathan lost his job. My mother diagnosed with cancer. Nathan going back to school for his Master’s. Elle came into our lives. Nathan started his own business while going to school. And the house got neglected as I was trying to help everyone else. Our master bedroom became the storage place for things that didn’t fit in other rooms.

THE DESPAIRING MASTER BEDROOM

Our master bedroom is relatively large. I haven’t put anything on the walls in hopes of painting it first. Three years later, still plain, empty walls. The white dressers are from IKEA and our bed is new. Everything else are hand-me-downs. Part of the problem is Nathan’s office in our room. It doesn’t create a relaxing atmosphere. Another problem is I don’t have a craft room. So my craft supplies are scattered throughout our room to keep the kids out of it. I would love to store it all in one place.

INSPIRATIONS & IDEAS

The feel of the room: relaxing, simple, natural, classic. I don’t exactly want to go for a theme, but I like the contemporary style without too much jazz. We need to upgrade the lighting, adorn the plain walls, decorate with whites and grays, organize craft supplies with decorative storage, lay a rug, and place a few furniture pieces. I am against having work in the bedroom, however, since the girls are taking up the other rooms, perhaps a nice partition to separate the office part.

Shirt Dress Take 2

It’s been a while since I repurposed the shirt dresses for Kaye and Elle. Well, the other day I was inspired by Lindsay at Liliash to do a second version of the dress shirt. I just freehand this one so there were a couple mistakes, but still wearable. I got the shirt at a thrift store for $1.50 and I wasn’t too keen on the pattern. However, Kaye will only wear pink. As she watched me make the dress, she commented with, “Mom, that dress is beautiful.” I’m glad she was able to overlook my mistakes.

Real Women, Real Moms

In Life on September 1, 2009 at 9:00 am

laundry

As women and as mothers, we obtained unrealistic ideas about what our home, family, and ourselves should be. Where did these unrealistic ideas come from? We’re saturated by it in the media, in our circle of friends, in our families, in the community, in the society, and even in our churches. And I’m right in the mist of it.

I follow blogs written by Stepford wife-ish mothers of five neatly dressed, intelligent, creative, and well-behaved children. They also design, invent, and create crafting things, blog about it, take amazing photography of their work, and post tutorials online for everyone to enjoy. They feed their family homemade meals made from scratch, read the latest bestseller books, contribute to their community and schools, and exercise. They are on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Flickr promoting their websites. They freelance for other blogs or magazines and write books. At least that’s what it seems like in my mind.

I have friends who have the bikini body 5 months after the birth of each child. They wear the fashionable wardrobe dazzled with the cutest jewelry. Their homes decorated with matching furniture and decorations.

Me? My picture is nothing like that. My waist and thighs are holding on to 10 pounds leftover from my first daughter. My house is relatively clean most of the time and it’s because of my OCD tendencies. But walk into my house unannounced you would find dishes in the sink, toys scattered on the floor of every room, books off the bookshelves, and dusty furniture. We eat PB&J at least once a week for lunch. And what’s that E word that I need more of in my life? Oh yeah, exercise.

However, I recently came to an important realization: Most of what we see of others and in the media is not really how it is. There is a behind the scene to every thing and everyone. I love that in the September issue of Glamour Magazine, they had a photo of a beautiful woman belly and all. It has caused quite the response from people everywhere applauding Glamour for showing a real woman. Another recent post by Vanessa Christenson on her blog, V and Co., displayed a picture of her messy house. Letting her readers know that she is like any other mom. I love it! Then Gabrielle Blair of Design Mom took us behind the scenes on a photo shoot for her article in the September issue of Parents Magazine. The process it took to get the room set up just right with the correct lighting and so forth is a lot of work to make it magazine worthy.

I think the sooner we realize that everyone has ups and downs, good days and bad days, strengths and weaknesses the happier we will be. Rather than comparing ourselves to others and feeling inadequate, use it as a driving force to motivate you to be better and do the best you can. Me included. Don’t stress over the little things. Will your children remember the times you played with them or the times you spent cleaning the house? I think time management is key. How we spend our time will determine the memories we will have years from now. What kind of memories are you making for yourself and your family?
