Project 52: Date Nights

In Project 52: Date Nights on December 31, 2009 at 9:00 am

I am excited about this announcement. And it involves you. Yes, you! I want you to participate and report back.

We approached that time of the year where we think about new goals and projects for 2010. I have been contemplating doing a Project 365 myself. Project 365? Set a goal to do something every day for a year all the while blogging about it or recording it somewhere somehow. You know, Julie & Julia. Then the more I thought about it, 365 is a bit too much for my schedule. If I am going to commit to the project, it has to be doable. So I am turning my Project 365 into Project 52. Cutting it down to just once a week. That’s feasible.

The project. I recently read an article in a magazine about a couple’s experience having date nights at home. Hum… sounds interesting. Nathan and I will celebrate our 6th anniversary in 2010 and sad to say, we have neglected consistent date night ever since Kaye was born over 3 years ago. We have the same excuses many of you also face. Nathan is in graduate school most evenings. We don’t want to find and pay for a babysitter every week. Our current financial situation leaves little allowance for date nights. We are too busy. We can’t think of anything to do. The house is a mess. We are tired. The excuses continue.

After reading the article, Nathan and I decided this was something we need to work on in 2010. We need to get better at setting aside time to enrich our marriage. And now, I introduce you to our Project 52: Date Nights. More specifically in house date nights, for us. The main points are for us to be creative, cheap and spend quality time together. Nathan and I have committed to do date night each week with the following criteria…

  • Every Friday night from 9 -10 p.m. is our date night. We usually have both kids in bed by 8:30 p.m.
  • Majority of the time the dates will be at home so we don’t need babysitters.
  • We rotate being in charge of date nights on a monthly basis.
  • Can’t do the same thing twice in one month.
  • Dates need to be free most of the time. If not free, then under a budget of $30. Cheaper than if we went out.
  • No children allowed.
  • Must create a date-like atmosphere. No frumpy clothes or pajamas. Make it a special event. Mind the details. But most of all, keep it simple.

Not only are we going to have date night beginning January 1st, we will be blogging about it here on SMM. Every Tuesday we will recap what we did for our date night the previous Friday. You will get a he said/she said critiques of the date.

Here is how YOU are involved. Yes, we want you to participate in Project 52: Date Nights with us! Whether you are in a relationship, engaged or married, I want you to commit to having weekly date nights with your special someone. I want the both of you to take this pledge. Read it, fill it out, sign it and post it somewhere you can see frequently. A little hesitant? Don’t worry, you can join Project 52: Date Nights any time.

Take the Project 52: Date Nights Pledge

Then check in with us every Tuesday for ideas, comments, feedbacks from our Project 52: Date Nights and yours. We want to hear from you and what creative ideas you came up with for date nights. Make comments and report how your date nights went each week. By the way, this is a family friendly site. So all dates and ideas will be appropriate for all ages. And please keep your comments family friendly too.

The pledge. Here is the Project 52: Date Nights pledge in PDF form for you to print out. Print one out for yourself. And maybe a few extras for your friends or family members to get them in on the fun. Discuss the project with your special someone. Talk about what is feasible for the two of you. Set a date and time to help you pencil that date in your calendars. Come up with a few criteria of your own. If you don’t want to do in house date nights, then plan going out date nights. The two important points here are be creative and keep it simple.

So… are you in or not? Make sure to involve your friends and families. Get them to take the pledge with their special someone. The more couples we get to do this, the more ideas and motivations we get to support each other in Project 52: Date Nights. While doing Project 52: Date Nights with us, if you come up with great ideas let me know so I can feature you on SMM! Come on! It’s only once a week. Only 52 dates to last you the whole year. Let’s do this!

2009 Year in Review

In Random on December 30, 2009 at 11:00 am

Considering Simply Modern Mom only began July of 2009, we will begin from there. I just can’t thank YOU enough for reading Simply Modern Mom and telling your friends about it. Yes, I read all your emails to me. Yes, I read all your comments. Yes, I absolutely LOVE my readers. You are one of a kind. I hope SMM is worthy of your loyalty. I have met some of the most amazing and talented people in the blogosphere. I hope to meet more of you in 2010.

Earlier today, I announced the redefinition of Simply Modern Mom: Simple. For the modern mom. And with that announcement, I said 2010 will be the year I make SMM more interactive for the readers. I want to make SMM a place for you to simplify your life and meeting people who have the same passion. It’s going to be a GREAT year!

OK, let’s see SMM in 2009…

  • First project I posted about was my dresses made from men’s dress shirts inspired by Dana at MADE.
  • First Friday’s 5 at 5 was the set of sewing patterns I purchase. Still haven’t made any of them. Maybe that should be a New Year resolution.
  • First draft of the SMM logo came July 6. A before and after of the logo…

Wow, that was a lot in one year. For more, check the archives in the bar on the right. Or you can see tutorials, tips, lists and more at the menu above. Thanks for being a part of Simply Modern Mom and we’ll see more of you in 2010!

Redefining Simply Modern Mom

In Random on December 30, 2009 at 9:00 am

Someone: You have a blog?

Me: Yes, it’s called Simply Modern Mom.

Someone: Cool. What is it about?

Me: Well…

If I have a hard time defining my blog. I’m sure you have a harder time telling people about my blog, that’s if you tell people about my blog. Simply Modern Mom launched 5 months ago and it started out as a place for me to share some of the projects I do for myself and others. You know, crafty stuff. And I still love that. But having met other great blogger and online friends, I found a greater need for Simply Modern Mom. I’m redefining Simply Modern Mom.

Simple. For the modern mom.

That’s right. Simply Modern Mom is a place for modern moms to collaborate and discover ways to simplify their lives. It’s for moms with any kind of lifestyle, whether you are working full-time, working part-time, working from home, a homemaker, a crafty mom, a PTA mom, a single mom, a military mom, mom with older kids, mom with younger kids, a first time mom or one-of-a-kind mom.

Nothing is going to change about the current content of this site. I will still post tutorials and other craft projects I am constantly doing. You may all ready notice that I try to simplify all my projects. Easy enough that anyone can do them. I will still make tons of lists giving tips and ideas of how to simplify motherhood, organize the home and entertain the children. I hope to be better at posting back to basics tips.

So what will be changing about Simply Modern Mom? I will be adding new things to the site. First off, there is a project I want EVERYONE (that means YOU) to participate with me. I will announce that tomorrow. Yes, you’ll have to wait.

Second, I am doing another segment on SMM where I want to get to know my readers and make some more blogging friends. In the 5 months of blogging on Simply Modern Mom, I have made some amazing blogging friends. I will be featuring some of them, some friends I haven’t met yet and some of you! I have a degree in journalism and one of the reasons why I studied journalism in college was because I believe everyone has a story to tell. I love hearing people’s stories and learn from their experiences. This segment will be called Simply Said. More on this later. Just be excited.

I do hope you like the changes. Remember, tomorrow there will be a fun announcement. Comment and let me know if you have ideas or suggestions. I love feedbacks and I do take the time to read every one of your comments. You can also email me at tiffany{at}simplymodernmom{dot}com.

Our Christmas 2009

In Holidays on December 29, 2009 at 9:00 am

Overall our Christmas we a delight. It was a surprisingly relaxing Christmas. We weren’t able to make it out to Washington (state) to visit my husband’s family. Rather, we spent Christmas with my family here in the South where it was rainy and windy. All went well with the exception of all of us getting a little cold. But our poor little Elle had ear infects the night before Christmas. Our pediatrician’s office was closed over the holiday and weekend. The pediatric urgent care had a wait of over 4 hours. So she suffered through until Monday morning when I could finally get her to a doctor.

Christmas Eve, Santa made an appearance at our home. We must have been good this year.

Christmas morning the gift opening began around 8:30 for us. Not too bad. The gift opening took quite a while because the kids wanted to play with each new toy as soon as it is opened.

The sketchbook caddy was a hit. She almost forgot about her other presents.

k gift
Kaye wrapped some of Elle’s toys in tape and construction paper as my Christmas gift. She was so excited. I loved every bit of it.

royal coach
Kaye’s royal coach from Santa.

elle gift
Elle looked and felt the worst on Christmas Day. But she was such a trooper making it to all the family gatherings.

glitter
This and another princess dress up clothes was the cause of all the glitter in the house. It’s on every one of us, all the furniture, carpets, floors, toys and everything else in the house.

necklace
Nathan got me a charm gold necklace. Love it!

firepit
I got him a fire pit. This one fit better in our backyard. It was too big to wrap without him noticing. So I hid it in the trunk of his car.

We had such a memorable Christmas. Hope your family did too. If you have a post on your blog of your Christmas, leave a link in the comments. I would love to see how your Christmas went.

Initialed Felt Hair Clips Tutorial

Giving my girls the initialed felt hair clips and some of the other patterns went well Christmas morning. Kaye loved having a hair clip with “K” on it just for her. The best thing about it was I made it in one sitting within minutes. I used scraps laying around in my craft closet.

Supplies:

  • hair clips
  • fleece or felt (I actually used fleece in this tutorial)
  • paper or cardstock
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • glue gun
  • embroidery floss
  • large eye needle

1. I reused some of my old hair clips that were functional, just worn. So I cleaned them first.

hair clips

2. Draw patters you want on paper or cardstock. Make sure the hair clip will fit in your pattern. For the circle, I found a vitamin cap that was large enough and traced it. I freehand the rest.

felt clips patterns

3. Get your felt or fleece. Fold it over so you can cut out 2 of the pattern at the same time.

4. Take one of the felt/fleece, fold in half and measure the clip in the center. Cut 4 tiny slits. This will hold the clip in place. See step 7.

5. Take the top circle and embroider the initial.

6. Hand stitch around the circle to enclose the front and back pieces.

7. Slip your clip into the slits previously cut in step 4.

8. Use glue gun to glue to clip to the felt/fleece where it touches. Remember don’t get glue in the center piece of the clip.

Friday’s 5 at 5: Why I Love Christmas

In Friday's 5 at 5 on December 25, 2009 at 5:00 am

popsicle christmas tree

Merry Christmas! I hope you are out enjoying the day with those you love. For those of you who wished for a white Christmas, I hope your wish came true. For me, I always wish against a white Christmas. And now, 5 reasons why I love Christmas…

  1. I believe in Christ. And it is wonderful that I can celebrate His birth. I love knowing there is someone who gives me undying and unconditional love.
  2. All the traditions. It is something I look forward to every year. Building the gingerbread houses. Finding an ornament that represents our year. Delicious Southern breakfast my aunt makes. The tense family gift exchange game we play with my extended family. Kids’ funny photos with Santa. Sending and receiving Christmas cards. My tradition to go Christmas shopping with my dad a few days before Christmas or on Christmas Eve.
  3. Overwhelming feeling the love. I get this abundance feeling of love this time of year. Maybe it is because people tend to be a little more generous and considerate of others. Maybe it is because I am surrounded by the people I love the most on Christmas Day.
  4. My little girls. There is nothing like Christmas with little girls. It makes all the crazy retail shopping, gift wrapping and stressing to finish last minute gifts all worth it. Just to see the excitement and anticipation in their eyes.
  5. Christmas carols. I love singing them. I love listening to them. I love hearing Kaye sing in her 3-year-old voice all about Santa, birth of Jesus and Christmas Day.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas from my family to yours.

felt hair clips

I was making Kaye and Elle some hair clips for their stockings. I figured I would make some extras for some of their friends. I had some used hair clips that were worn, but still functional. I washed them and reused them with some scrap felt. I think they turned out pretty well. OK, maybe not the picture. I could have used a different background and made it look nicer. But we are all sick around here. I am trying to finish up some last minute things and go to bed by 9 p.m. The good news is I’ll have a tutorial for this coming next week. Hope you have a great Christmas!

Twisted Paper Snowflake Tutorial

In Crafts, Holidays, Tutorials on December 23, 2009 at 9:01 am

twisted paper snowflake

I am being featured on Bloom today! Emily of Bloom invited me to guest post on their site and I was more than excited to do so. I even came up with a forth snowflake design for the special occasion. If you haven’t been over to Bloom before, you will have to visit. Anne and Emily of Bloom are full great articles about family and motherhood.

Back to the snowflake. I got a bit crazy with this one… probably because I have been cooped up in my house for the last few days. But did you noticed that this time I used double sided cardstock paper? Yes, I upgraded my snowflakes. This is the last one I promise. I’m sure you’re quite sick of them now. Just in case you are not, here is a picture and links to the other three previous snowflakes. The piping paper snowflake, the twirly paper snowflake and the cookie cutter paper snowflake. This twisted paper snowflake (nicknamed crazy octopus) is a combination of both the piping and twirly snowflake.

3 snowflakes

Supplies:

  • cardstock paper
  • 8 markers, pens or pencils
  • 4 pipe cleaners/chenille
  • paper cutter, scissors
  • ribbon, string or thread
  • needle
  • hole punch or other embellishments for the center
  • glue
  • low adhesive tape

1. Cut 9 strips of cardstock 3/4″ x 6″.

octopus snowflake strips

2. Place glue at one end of the first strip. Then make a ring, only to one strip of cardstock.

octopus snowflake glue

3. Fold one end of the remainder 8 strips at 3/4″.

4. Tape one of the strip diagonally to the markers, then wrap it around and tape the second end. Do to all 8 strips. Allow the paper to settle for at least an hour. The longer the better.

octopus snowflake twist markers

5. While waiting for the twists to settle. Take your pipe cleaners and mark at the edge of the ring where the holes need to be. There will be 8 holes all evenly spaced.

6. Unwrap the twisted strips then apply glue to the end where you had previously folded at 3/4″.

7. Glue the strips of twisted paper onto the ring according to the markings previously made with the pipe cleaners. Make sure they are all equally spaced.

8. Use a small hole punch or scrapbooking hole punch with hammer tools to punch holes in the middle of each glued ends on the ring.

9. Pull the pipe cleaners through the holes across from each other. Then wrap the curls around the pipe cleaners.

10. Trim off excess pipe cleaner ends.

Creamy Zucchini Soup Recipe

In Food on December 22, 2009 at 10:40 am

creamy zucchini soup

My favorite soup this year… We had some friends from Nathan’s school over for dinner about a month ago. I decided to make the entire meal from scratch. That’s right. No shortcuts, nothing from a box. The menu consisted of this soup with rolls, green beans, broccoli rice, curried shrimp kabobs and apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.

The soup, it’s simple.

5 zucchinis
3 carrots
1 onion
1 8 oz. pkg cream cheese
4 cups chicken stock

Cut zucchini, carrot and onion into 1″ pieces. Place in a large pot with chicken stock. Cover pot and bring to a boil. Once boiled, allow to simmer for about 7 minutes. Put half the vegetables mixture (with some of the stock) in a blender with 1/2 the cream cheese. Puree until creamy and well blended. Put in a bowl, then do the same to the other 1/2 of the mixture.

That’s it. Simple and delicious.

Kaye’s Sketchbook Caddy

In Crafts, Holidays on December 21, 2009 at 9:01 am

sketchbook caddy inside

I have been lucky in the sense that Kaye’s Christmas wishlist to Santa has been pretty simple the last two years. Last year, she wanted a candy cane. That’s it. I got her the biggest candy cane I could find. This year, the list got longer. A horn (the musical instrument kind, not the rhino kind), paper, pencils and a book. Easy enough, except the horn.

And because I can’t just wrap a ream of paper and a couple pencils and toss it under the tree, I came up with a sketchbook caddy for Kaye. You see, we’ve been having a little problem with Kaye and her drawings. She sees me with my sketchbook and is motivated to draw, too. I love that she is creative like me. However, the problem has been she takes the crayons, pens and markers then draws on our hearth, dressers, bookshelves and my office desk. Not ideal for the resale value of our house if we ever move. I’ve been trying to drill in her that we only draw on paper. Nothing else. Hopefully this will take care of the problem.

I drafted the caddy idea in a day, then finished it the next day. And I had all the supplies at home, just needed the sketchpad and markers. What do you think? And anyone out there with an idea of how to get blue crayons out of a slab of marble?

I don’t know about you, but I have the hardest time finding gifts for the men in my life… husband, brothers, father, father-in-law and grandfathers. This year, how about…

1. Fire pit. What guy doesn’t like the outdoors? Now tell me, what guy doesn’t like to burn things outdoors? There. Done. This one is from Lowes.

2. Leather excursion case. If your man travels quite a bit for work or just likes to travel in style. This one is monogramed by Red Envelope.

3. Space pen. I got this for Nathan a few years ago. What a boring gift. A pen. But a bullet space pen. It’s he favorite thing. He takes it with him everywhere. It’s short when closed, regular pen length when fully sized. It writes upside down, in the freezing cold, in boiling heat and under water.

4. SunnyBags. For the eco-friendly tech guy. These bags have solar panels that charges your gadgets while he is out and about. These SunnyBags are made in Austria. You can other solar bags on Amazon.

5. Cloud 9 Living. If you rather create a memory and give him the experience of his lifetime then Cloud 9 Living is your answer. You purchase an experience or a gift card that is good for an experience of his choice. Experiences are relative to where you live, but some examples are hot air balloon rides, race car ride along, couples massage, private golf lesson by a PGA pro, adventure film making and I could go on. This gift will win you the wife of the year award.

Apple Spiced Cake from Scratch

apple spiced cake cream cheese frosted cake

My mom was away on her birthday in November. She recently returned from her 2-month long trip to Taiwan. Then my dad had his birthday last week. We decided to combine both their birthdays and celebrated it together. On my mother’s request, I baked her a cake from scratch. What we have here is a apple spiced cake with cream cheese frosting. I have to say, it was my first time baking a cake entirely from scratch, frosting included. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be and I was able to control the amount of sugar that went into that cake. We are a family without a sweet tooth. It was delicious, if I do say so myself.

DIY Microwavable Dough Ornaments

In Crafts, Holidays, Tutorials on December 14, 2009 at 9:01 am

star ornament

tradition Nathan and I started when we were dating was add a new ornament to our tree each year. Something that reminds us of that particular year. Last year, we couldn’t find any store ornaments that represented our year, so I decided we would make our own microwaveable salt dough ornament. It was quick and easy with only THREE ingredients for the dough.

love ornament

Supplies:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • toothpicks
  • cookie cutters
  • rolling pin
  • microwavable glass plate
  • paint, acrylic or tempera
  • glitter, optional
  • Mod Podge
  • paint brushes
  • ribbons
  • cooling rack

1. In a bowl, mix together the three ingredients – flour, salt, and water. Mix well, then roll flat on a flat surface (counter or table top). You will want the ornaments to be less than 1/2″ thick.

2. Using cookie cutters, cut out the ornaments.

3. Use the toothpick to make a whole at the top of the ornament to string ribbons through for hanging.

4. Place similar sized ornaments onto a microwavable glass plate. Heat in microwave until water has evaporated from the mixture. And since all microwaves are different, I would start out heating 2 minutes, check it, then continue in 30-second or 1-minute increments. If you heat too long, the top and bottom of the ornaments may start to brown. A little browning may be OK if you use a darker paint color over it. And most ornaments will crinkle a bit at the top. There is not much you can do about that except sand it down later. The ornaments will be extremely hot.

5. Allow the ornaments to cool on the cooling rack. Then paint. Once the paint is dry, you will want to seal it with a couple layers of Mod Podge.

6. String a ribbon through the hole and hang on tree.

Friday’s 5 at 5: Memory Gifts Using Photos

In Friday's 5 at 5, Photography on December 11, 2009 at 5:00 am

cupcake

I am constantly looking for ways to make gift giving more personal. Those are my favorite gifts to give. As we are in the season of giving, here are five ideas for using your photos…

  1. Favorite things. This Christmas, I made photo books of my kids favorite things. It was a medium size flipbook. One for Elle and one for Kaye. It’s fun to be able to capture their favorite things at this age. I also used letter blocks to spell out their favorite things, an idea I received from Liz’s blog.
  2. Favorite memories. This year, I hand bound personal books for our parents for Mother’s and Father’s Day. I had each of our siblings write a couple favorite memories with our parents. Then dug through old photographs for pictures to go along with the stories. We all laughed and cried taking a trip down memory lane.
  3. While you were gone. My brother and some of Nathan’s siblings travel all around the world. We send them photo books of our children growing up while they were gone. Catch them up on some of the things they missed.
  4. Messages. Have family members or friends hold a sign with a message of ‘I love you’ or ‘thank you’ or ‘we miss you’ in a photograph. Put it on a card or make it into a poster.
  5. Cover an event. At a special event, take ample pictures and make a little scrapbook for them. Don’t forget to include your thoughts and feelings of the event. This is great for weddings, birthdays, graduations and performances.

Poloppo_T-me

**This giveaway is closed. Winner will be announced Dec. 24.**

Remember when I featured Poloppo as one of my intriguing sites a couple months ago? Now they are here as a Winter Days Giveaways sponsor! How nice are they? What they do is simple. You purchase a t-me kit that contains 10 mini-markers, square paper, a catalog of t-shirts and a pre-paid envelope. Have your child draw their design. Mail it back in with the pre-paid envelopes. And Poloppo will send your child their shirt they designed. Done. Great way for your child to display his art other than on your refrigerator.

Poloppo is giving away ONE newly released long sleeve t-me kit that includes everything mentioned above. Whoo hoo! This giveaway includes all my international readers. Poloppo is willing to ship out-of-country if you win.

Intriguing Sites: Storenvy

In Intriguing Sites, The Gift Box on December 8, 2009 at 8:59 am

storenvy

Some of you noticed I am using Storenvy for my store. And others mentioned you have never heard of Storenvy. Well, they are pretty new. So I’m featuring them in my Intriguing Sites this week.

For those of you with an online store and those looking to open an online store, you will want to consider Storenvy. Here’s why. It’s free! They don’t take a percentage of your sales. They use PayPal for their financial transactions and the PayPal fee is the only thing you pay to PayPal. No transaction fee or percentage fee to Storenvy. They don’t charge to post items in your store either.

What’s the catch? Why would they do it for free? Rather than making money through charging seller fees, they hope you will use them to print shirts. That’s their main business. Storenvy offers award-winning T-shirts and merchandise printing. Store owners are not required to use them to print shirts, but if you are in that business, they hope you will use them. That’s it.

Other benefits, you can do just about what you want with your store on Storenvy. It has fully customizable storefronts for you to design it the way you want it. They have a ton of amazing store features. And just like any other online store communities, it is a fun place to shop and support online small businesses.

And look at what I found last Saturday on their main page… Yup. One of the mustaches was being featured in their home page! Mr. Hugo is in the middle under ‘New & Interesting’.

Last of the 3 part snowflake tutorial series. Hope you have been having fun making the other two snowflakes, cookie cutter paper snowflake and piping paper snowflake. Then a surprise forth snowflake, the twisted paper snowflake.

3 snowflakes

Measurements and sizes are according to the snowflakes I made for this tutorial. You can adjust to make a snowflake bigger, smaller or fuller.

Supplies:

  • cardstock paper (must use a thick type paper like cardstock)
  • paper cutter, scissors
  • pens, pencils or markers
  • stapler
  • ribbon, string or thread
  • low adhesive tape
  • hole punch or other embellishments for the center
  • glue

1. Cut your paper into 1/2″ x 6″ strips. Cut 6 strips.

2. Tape one end of the strip diagonally to a pen, pencil or marker. Twist the rest of the strip around the marker, then tape the second end. Do to all 6 strips. Let it sit for about an hour or so.

3. Unravel the paper from the marker.

Friday’s 5 at 5: My Christmas Wishlist

In Friday's 5 at 5, Products on December 4, 2009 at 5:00 am

I always have a hard time with my Christmas list. It is difficult for me to distinguish a difference between what I want and what I need. Maybe there’s not much of a difference. Ha.

No. 1: Letterpress by Lifestyle Crafts. I watched the tutorials, read some reviews and I think this would be the perfect introduction into letterpress for me. It is simple to use and extremely affordable as far as letterpresses go. I just think about all the cute cards and paper stuff I can make with it. My mind is going wild.

comboKitletterpress

l letterpress

No. 2: Necklaces by Lisa Leonard. She is all the rage right now and you can see why. I have tried to win one of her jewelry pieces from every giveaway out there. No luck. One day, I will have to own the Be Still necklace. I’m quite found of the family crest, too.

be still necklace family crest

No. 3: Magic Mouse by Apple. Uh, yeah. My computer is really not that old, 2 to be exact. But the mouse is all ready not working well. It’s mainly the scroll ball and the pointer has a mind of its own. Maybe one too many licks by Elle (she’s 10 months). This takes care of the scroll ball problem and its wireless.

magic mousemagic mouse2

No. 4: Ekby hensvik by Ikea. I have been looking for white wall-mount shelves for our master bedroom. A few of these would do.

No. 5: White photography lighting. Our house doesn’t get much natural lighting inside. One of the few things I don’t like about it. So when I try to take pictures of things inside, it’s impossible to get good lighting without using flash. And I’m not a flash person. Couldn’t find a good picture for this one (ironic).

I featured Hope for Women on SMM back in August when I first discovered the Tagua bracelets. Oh, how lovely. And the more I learned about Hope for Women, the more I am amazed by what they do for women around the world.

Here’s an excerpt from their site:

Hope For Women brings premium quality, Fair Trade products created by women artisans to the mainstream marketplace. We are a socially responsible organization committed to providing sustainable employment for economically disadvantaged women worldwide. We offer products exclusively made by women so they can take control of their lives and their futures. Hope For Women is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation. Every woman is paid a fair, livable wage under safe and healthy working conditions. We aim to have the highest environmental standards in all aspects of our business, and incorporate our “green” ethic into our products, packaging, and every decision we make.

And check out their home products. I think the vase above would look great in our guest room.

The Tagua jewelry is made from nuts found within the seed pods of the Ivory Nut Palm, a native species of the Colombian rainforest. And the greeting cards are made of handmade “tree-free” paper faced with real pressed wild flowers and native plantings from the foothills of the Himalayas. This giveaway is only for U.S. residents.

Each bracelet is made by economically disadvantaged women artisans and their families. You can feel proud wearing this bracelet knowing it is changing and improving lives. Money collected from the bracelets also help provide incentive to protect and maintain the rainforest.

I know, I announced a Simply Modern Mom store like months ago. And many of you have been asking about it. Well, it got held back by more pressing projects – like the Winter Days Giveaways going now, guest appearances on other blogs, Nathan finishing up his semester, house projects, so on and so forth. Then there’s the fact that I am one of those people who does a ton of research before making a commitment such as opening an online store. But it is finally here. Not completely done since I have other products to add that I have to finish up first. Nonetheless, it’s up and open as of today.

May I present to you… The Gift Box by Simply Modern Mom. And the best part is…  At The Gift Box, every gift comes with a box. Or some kind of gift wrapping. That’s right. We eliminated troubles of gift wrapping by providing it at no additional cost.

To celebrate it’s grand opening, I am participating in Sew, Mama, Sew’s Giveaway Day going on today. It’s a day of giveaways and they have a list of all those participating at their blog. But the actual giveaway is on each person’s individual sites. So here’s mine! Yes, the Winter Days Giveaways is still going on but you get an additional giveaway today!

mustaches

I’m giving away a great stocking stuffer…  A set of 3 mustaches to ONE winner, you get to pick which styles you would like. This giveaway ends Sunday, Dec. 6 at 10 p.m. This one is only for those within the U.S.

To enter, all you have to do is give me an honest critique of The Gift Box – what you like, what you don’t like. This would require you to go to The Gift Box and check it out. No critiques? Then let me know which of my crafts (you can check out my MADE page to see them all) you would like to see in my store. That’s it. Good luck!

Love.Obsess.Inspire. Giveaway

In Events, Giveaway on December 1, 2009 at 9:00 am

**This giveaway is now closed. Winner will be announced Dec. 15.**

My first time on Lexi’s site, Love.Obsess.Inspire., I was taken by the contents of her posts. It is definitely a place I go to for inspiration. I mean she is a graphic designer, so everything looks great over there. Her blog is a compilation of all the things she loves, things she obsesses over and things that inspire her. My favorite thing about her site? The printable goodies, by far.

LOI-ChristmasCard

Lexi is giving ONE winner a set of 25 holiday cards designed by her, pictured above. The cards are 5″ x 5″ with matching envelopes and seals. This giveaway includes all my international readers. Lexi is willing to ship out-of-country if you win.

To enter, do ANY of the following. For multiple entries, do more than one and make sure you leave a separate comment for each entry.

  1. Leave a comment below and tell me what kind of Christmas cards do you send out (personalized, custom, store bought, newsletters, etc.).
  2. Go to Love.Obsess.Inspire. and tell me your favorite thing about Lexi’s blog.
  3. Blog about this giveaway and leave a link to your post in a separate comment.
  4. ‘Share’ this giveaway by doing one of the ‘Share’ options below (Twitter, Facebook, Kirtsy, StumbleUpon, or Email).
  5. Subscribe to Simply Modern Mom by RSS, email or Twitter. All ready subscribing? Just tell me in a separate comment.

This giveaway will close Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 10 p.m. EST. The winner will be announced Tuesday, Dec. 15. To see a list of other giveaways going on now for the Winter Days Giveaways, click on the image below or see the list at the top right bar.

And don’t forget about your surprise. Each entry you do for any of these sponsored giveaways during The Winter Days Giveaways will automatically enter you to win a set of my fake mustaches on a stick! So the more entries you do, the better chance you have of winning the sponsor’s prize as well as a set of fake mustaches. Enter away and good luck!

Start a New Holiday Tradition

gingerbread houses

Our 2nd annual gingerbread house contest with my parents and brother.

There are so many great ideas for family traditions out there floating around the blogosphere. One of our family traditions at Christmas is our annual gingerbread house building contest. It was a tradition that Nathan and I started our first Christmas together as a married couple where we spent it with my family. Every year, the houses get more and more elaborate. And every year, we find numerous creative ways of using graham crackers, frosting and candy decorations. My little brother is notorious for building the craziest stuff.

Here are some other ideas for family traditions you may want to try…

  • Have a guest of honor each night at the dinner table. Everyone says something nice about that person.
  • Visit a local nursing home to cheer up those less visited – carol, do a puppet show, karaoke, play games.
  • Anonymously donate items to the homeless shelter or to a family less fortunate.
  • Have a family outing to a museum or a play.
  • Start a traveling package with a family member out-of-state by filling a shoebox or a flat rate box with little gifts or homemade items back and forth to each other.
  • Make a special meal or treat and only make it around the time of the holiday.
  • Write a year in review letter to your future self or to your children/grandchildren and talk about the lessons learned that year and the things you are grateful for.
  • Look through old family photo albums or scrapbooks and laugh at old memories.
  • Do a Christmas treasure hunt by hiding all the gifts Christmas morning and having the children hunt for them.

What are some of your most cherished family traditions?
