BTB Tip #13: Scheduling Doctor Appointments

Back to basics tip #13: When you are scheduling a doctors appointment, avoid long waits there by making your appointment as early as you can. The best time to schedule appointments is as soon as they are open or right after their lunch break. The later in the day the more behind they can get. That also means more wait for you.

Tell me… What are some tips you have for waiting at the doctor’s office? How do you keep kids busy?

It is amazing how much quicker my prenatal appointments were when scheduled at 8am (plus I tended to weigh less). I was in and out in under 30 min. If I had a 2pm I would be stuck waiting for an hour at least.

As for keeping the kids occupied – I’ve been turning to my phone and ipod lately. They are both (4 and 17m) in LOVE with a $2 download of a Yo Gabba Gabba episode I found a few weeks ago.

I also try to plan my kids visits in bulk. Today we have oral rehab, followed by a hearing test. Saving us TONS of commute/out of work time.

Activity books and crayons can help the wait for the doctor.

Random question…Is that your clock or a photo you found? I love it! I would love to know where to get one.

I agree with the iPod Touch/iPhone! I found the Sesame Street video podcasts (free!) are perfect for the waiting room! It’s like 10-15 minute version of Sesame Street and they post new ones all the time.

I have four kids under six, so between OB appointments last year for our newest baby and well-visits for each of them… we spend a good bit of time in tiny little exam rooms! We do a lot of I Spy. I never leave home without Matchbox cars and crayons (literally in every pocket/bag I own!) They are perfect for the white paper on the exam table… they’re going to throw it away and change it as soon as we leave anyway. I almost always book either the first appointment of the day or the first appointment after lunch. The only time I can remember it ever being an issue was with my three boys while my OB had to run off and deliver a baby… he was gone over an hour and that room was getting REALLY small. We blew up gloves like balloons, played every game I could think of and still my youngest locked himself in the bathroom and my middle guy scraped his knee on the backside of the exam table. It was the only week in that pregnancy that my blood pressure was elevated. A coincidence? I think not! 🙂

I bring my old magazines and donate them to the waiting room. It helps me get rid of them and it helps them keep an updated selection for me to read. (I get blood work done regularly and am always bring magazines in for them – they can’t seem to keep any around…people take them!
