My New Hair Do & Worst Hair Story

All right, you asked for it. Here’s my new hair do. This is exactly what I told my stylist, “I want it short, but not a boy or pixie hair cut. I want it a bit edgy but no A-line cuts. And I want something can grow out to shoulder length without looking like a mullet.” I showed her the pictures I dog-eared in my haircut magazine. And this is what she came up with. I like it. It’s a style I’ve never tried before.

Some of my friends were shocked that I would get my hair all chopped off. Well, I never been that attached to my hair. I don’t get emotional about it. It’s always one of those things where I’m like, “It’ll grow back out soon enough.” And my hair grows fast. I’ve tried lots of different things on my hair, especially in high school. I went through a phase in high school where on different occasions peroxide it, dyed it, highlighted, used a henna dye (that does not smell good) and even had purple highlights once. My dad called me grape head during that phase.

My worst hair story… When I was a nanny in NYC, a couple of my nanny friends (Hi Claire and Sarah!) and I decided to dye each other’s hair. Back then, the cap was popular for doing highlights. Well, that didn’t work out so well for me, especially when the dye leaked through the holes in the cap and made huge bleach spots instead of streaks. This wasn’t the worst part. The worst part was when I came home, I went to a salon to have it fixed. It was not my normal stylist. And this lady dyed my hair black to get rid of the spotty look then put highlights during that same appointment. I told her I didn’t want the cap, but she insisted on using the cap. She promised it wouldn’t leak this time. Oh yeah it leaked. Spotty highlights again. She couldn’t dye it a third time to get rid of the spots. And she got black dye all over my shirt. Then she charged me $120 for her mistakes. I was so mad. Paid her, never went back again. Told all my friends to never go there. I also had them pay me for the shirt they ruined.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and votes on the different hair styles. I loved reading what you thought about the different styles. Also, thanks for your great stories relating to some of the things I am going through. I think being able to connect with other mothers and relate to their life stories is one of the amazing things about motherhood.

your new hair style makes you look hip and cool. You also look younger than the other picture. Imagine, all that with just one hair cut. My horror story was when I was 15 years old and my sister took me to have my hair permed….let’s just say, the perm was BAD!!! My hair smelled like the chemicals for almost a month, couldn’t get the smell out. Part of it didn’t get permed and part of it was curly and part of it was wavy…..it’s a good thing my friends were very supportive and took turns straightening my hair out with a hot iron.

love your hair cut. My worst story is this: During Thanksgiving, when I was first married, I got my hair cut. The woman was very rough on my head AND she was getting the cut wrong. She kept having to cut it shorter and shorter because she was incapable of cutting a straight line. I finally just told her to STOP because we were getting into super short/mullet territory and I just wanted to leave. I paid and went home crying. I don’t cry often, so my husband was unsure of what to do.

Why do you we feel compelled to pay someone for a service that was done poorly or botched? Now that I am older I would ask to speak to a manager and discuss ways to fix the cut or get discount before I left.

hi cheree! i have no idea why we feel compelled to pay people that does a bad job. really. i wonder the exact same thing when i think back at my horrible hair experience. i shouldn’t have paid $120 for what that lady did to my hair and my clothes. i’ve had much better hair cuts and colors for less than that. live and learn i guess. :)

Perfect! Looks way great on you (& you look so youthful). Is it much easier to deal with?

I’ve cried over hair twice: One salon gave me HORIZONTAL bleach stripes down the back of my head. (I can’t believe my hair didn’t fall out in chunks at the roots.) Another time, although given strict instructions on what I wanted, an abrupt stylist gave me, instead, a butch cut that took me a year to grow out and basically orange hair.

I’ve got baaaaad hair, but each awful hair day I try to think of my (young) friend who has stage 4 cancer & has lost her hair twice over the past 5 years due to chemo.

thanks everyone for your kind comments about my hair. it is very easy to deal with now. i just lightly flip out with a straightener and add a little pomade to the tips. done. i love simple hair styles that are easy to do.

Such a flattering style! Really looks great on you – your stylist should be complimented for finding the right look for you. Enjoy being so hip!

Heehee! Oh, man I so remember that time in New York! I loved my fire engine-red hair, but I felt so bad the highlights didn’t turn out for you! I remember how mad you were about that lady who didn’t know what the heck she was doing. I didn’t realize it had been THAT bad!

And I think the new style is super fun and cute!

My worst hair cut was right before Picture Day in 1st grade. I had long hair and wanted it shoulder-length like my mom’s. Well, the lady chopped it all the way off! It totally looked like a boy’s hair cut! I was so upset. Needless to say, I cried on picture day.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! You do look younger. It’s amazing because you almost look like a different person, a younger sister. A hip young mom. It’s YOU and I’d say it is a keeper.

I really like your new ‘do. Very cute. :) That hair story was one of my worst hair stories too. But the hair stylist I went after our little experiment actually fixed my hair. I didn’t know the last part of your story. That’s so sad.
