I know these are the stuff my kids will eat no matter what. No whining. No complaining. No pushing the plate away. And of course, they are not always the healthiest of foods.
- Green beans. They eat this like candy. It’s the only vegetable they eat without coaxing.
- Applesauce or yogurt. I try to get various flavors with no sugar added (an none of the artificial sweeteners either) and low fat.
- Ice cream. They are like their mom. Can’t turn away ice cream.
- Fruits. They are fruit junkies, which makes me happy. Apples, pears, pineapple, strawberries, bananas. They especially love the dehydrated fruits.
- Crackers. Goldfish, Ritz, graham crackers, rice crackers. You name it, they’ll eat it.
» Tell me… What are your children’s favorite foods? I am looking for healthy snack to give my children… something other than carbs (i.e. crackers). Any suggestions?
Powerballs are one of our favorite go-to snacks. I can make them and keep them in the fridge, although they never last for long:

My two love granola bars. The only problem with that is that they are very crumbly. So watch out for granola bits all over the place.
As far as snacks they always go for home made fruit leather, fresh blue berries, grape tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, cheerios and frosted mini wheat’s in a bag.
I can’t turn away ice cream either. But my son likes weird foods too — sardines and seaweed. He’s definitely his father’s child! ha!

Edamame, raw carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, Annie’s Bunny Snacks and Bunny Grahams, TJ’s Peanut Butter Crackers, Brothers Dried Fruit..a lot more than I think they do =)
i want to know where everyone is getting their dried fruit? it’s hard to find, for me. do you dehydrate your own?
My son is a fruit junkie too and I LOVE it. And yes, crackers, crackers, crackers for my son.
My kids LOVE cucumbers. I serve them peeled and cut in circles and in spears. Especially on a hot day, these are great. I keep them readily cut in a plastic container, in the fridge, so they are cooled and ready to eat! I also put peeled and cut carrots in with them. So glad to have kiddos that love to eat their veggies!
Costco has a decent selection of dehydrated food but I’m looking into getting a dehydrator to do it myself. Dehydrated fruits are EXPENSIVE, even in bulk. My kids LOVE to eat carrots and ranch dip. In fact, Kayden turned down rainsins for carrots today dispite that Lana is more of my veggie eater than he is. It was surprising.
Be careful of the yogurt that you give your kids. Even though it states “low sugar” it is still loaded with it, and worse, it’s high fructose corn syrup. We buy NOTHING that has it in it and very rarely do we eat it; only if we are out and about and that’s our only option. Of course, I think I’ve mentioned before, we stick to the no sugar rule but we occassional splurge. I buy the Dannon, all natural, plain, low-fat yogurt. It still has 12g of sugar (I think) to 1 cup, but less than any other yogurt on the market. I got the kids used to it by adding agave or applesauce but now they will eat it completely plain. I added 4-5 various fruits to a bowl the other night after dinner and topped it off with this yogurt for dessert. Both kids replied, “this is the best treat, EVER!”. Made me feel good as they gobbled it down. Same goes for oatmeal, IF your kids eat it. Stick to the plain oatmeal (the church’s food storage oatmeal is grand!) and add your own items to it to sweeten it such as bananas, applesauce, agave, raisins, etc. I never used to be a label watcher with such high expectations until a good friend of mine pointed it out to me. The less ingredients, the better, nothing with more than 9g of sugar in it (not high fructose), and we try to get organic though it CAN be expensive.
So my kids enjoying snacking on fruits, some veggies, we limit crackers, string cheese, and fruit leathers are also saved for desserts. Sorry this is so long!
ok, vanessa. i have so much to learn from you! i am somewhat conscious of the sugar intake of my children. but i need to learn how to do better at it. teach me please!
My kids love imitation crabmeat as a snack. Good source of protein and it is low in fat. Also frozen peas. We microwave them in a zip and steam bag for 2.5-3 min, and it is an easy dish. My daughter will even eat them frozen, as well as frozen corn and call it veggie ice cream. Kinda weird, but hey, whatever works, right?
