Intriguing Sites: Pinterest

Pinterest is my new favorite thing. It is a way for you to categorize, tag and organize your bookmarks from blog posts or just about any website. And since I’m all about systemizing, listing and organizing, this hit a soft spot in my heart.

Here’s the thing. Right now, you can join Pinterest by invitation only. You can go to the site and request for an invite and I don’t know if there is a waiting list or what. Or you can be invited by someone. Well, the people at Pinterest gave me 100 invitations to give to my readers. Read on to find out what it is then go to the bottom of this post to find out how you can be invited to join.

My Bookmarking Problems

Here was my problem, I’m sure you have the same problem. I have 142 blogs I subscribe to in my RSS reader. That’s not including friends and families’ private blogs. And as I go through the unread posts on my reader, I find photos, tips, inspiration, tutorials or things that lead me to think of something else that I want to bookmark from the sites. I used to have this insanely long list of bookmarked posts in a folder on my web browser bookmark bar. The problem with that was it was hard for me to go back and find what I wanted when it’ only gives me the title of the post. I would have to go to the link to find out what it was that I bookmarked.

Then I moved from bookmark bar to Tumblr. That worked a bit better, but still not what I was looking for. Since Tumblr is in blog form, you have to scroll down or search for that one post I was looking for. The below image is of my Tumblr site.

How to Pin

Along came Pinterest to save the day. Pinterest has a bookmarklet, a button you add to your bookmark bar. Every time you are reading a post or on a site where you see something you want to bookmark, you click on that button on your bar and it pulls up all the images on that page. Click on the image you want to use for your pin and done. The image and the URL for that particular post or site that you just pinned have been added to your pin boards. You can add tags and categories and notes to it. Then it goes to your Pinterest account like this…

What’s a Pin Board?

Pin boards are like a virtual bulletin board where you pin images and ideas to with a thumb tack. Now think of it as having a different pin board for each category. For me, some of my pin boards/categories are I Wanna Purchase (my universal wishlist), I Wanna Make (tutorials of things I would love to make one day), I Wanna Home (home decorating ideas) and so forth.

It’s a Social Network Too

You can see other people’s boards and pins, like mine. You can follow people’s specific boards if you like their tastes or things they’ve posted there. Or you can follow all their boards. If you see something someone else pinned, you can like it and/or repin it onto your boards. You can comment on pins, you can email and share pins or boards with your friends and family. And they just added a new feature called collaboration. You and someone else can collaborate and pin things to the same board, similar to groups in Flickr or Facebook.

How to Join Pinterest

Now that you know about Pinterest, you want to join right? It’s quite fun. And it was the perfect solution for my bookmarking problem. I love it. I love the site’s clean design. Its user-friendly features. Visually inticing. I can find that post I was looking for so easily and quickly too. And in talking to people at Pinterest, they offer me 100 invitations for my readers. That’s right. The first 100 people who leaves a comment below and say something to the effect of “I wanna join Pinterest!” I’ll send you an invitation via email. I will try to get the invitations to you within a day of your request. If you haven’t heard from me, check your spam mail first to see if it might have gone to spam. If not, then email me or leave another comment.

Once you join Pinterest, follow my boards by going to my direct Pinterest site page. And then I’ll give you a few days to play around with it. Next week, I’ll be doing a Pinterest Party where we will all collaborate together on a board. So come on! Join in on the fun and participate in the Pinterest Party next week!
