The Vintage Pearl Winner

A quick interruption to say…

Thank you, thank you to all of you who participated in the over-used recipe swap. There are some fantastic recipes that I am excited to try. I’m having a hard time picking which ones to try first. Are you bookmarking some awesome recipes?

Thank you to all my blog friends and the famous bloggers who shared their recipes with us this week. The pictures were fantastic. And wasn’t it interesting to see what they eat in their household?

We are still in dire need of a little over 200 recipes to reach our goal. Please, please, please tell your friends and family about it. Get them to link or leave recipes in the comments. I featured Hope for Women on SMM back in August when I first discovered the Tagua bracelets. Oh, how lovely. And the more I learned about Hope for Women, the more I am amazed by what they do for women around the world.

The Idea Room is a site all moms should know about. Amy’s blog is loaded with creative crafts and activities to do with the kids. She does easy to follow tutorials and recipes. I know, I announced a Simply Modern Mom store like months ago. And many of you have been asking about it. Well, it got held back by more pressing projects – like the Winter Days Giveaways going now, guest appearances on other blogs, Nathan finishing up his semester, house projects, so on and so forth. Huge announcement! Simply Modern Mom is celebrating our first Christmas and we have YOU to thank. I started this site in July of this year and it has all ready surpassed all my goals and expectations I had set for SMM this year. And it is because of your support, your interests, your comments, your time here on SMM that has made it what it is today. What began as a site with only 20-30 pageviews a day in July, SMM has grown to over 1,000 pageviews a day in just four months! I just can’t express enough gratitude to all my readers.

To celebrate, I put together SMM’s first The Winter Days Giveaways. I have 10 amazing sponsors each doing a giveaway here on SMM in a four week event. Intriguing Sites: Pomodoro, a Giveaway & Free Book

Conquer time. Every parent, working or staying at home, knows time goes too quickly when you are juggling kids and a million other things. Thanks to the mastermind of Francesco Cirillo, he developed the Pomodoro Technique. During his university studies, Francesco found himself in a slump and needed a way to focus. His solution came in the form of a tomato timer from the kitchen, pomodoro meaning tomato in Italian. This pomodoro was his time tutor. Then came the technique.

The technique is pretty simple. At the beginning of each day, go through your task list and organize according to priority. Then set your pomodoro, a timer, to 25 minutes. Work on the task for 25 minutes then take a 5 minute break. That is the gist of it. This technique allows you to stay focus on the task you are working on, keep track of interruptions and calculate exactly how long it takes you to get something done. Simple. To the point. And that is how we like it around here. The short 45-page book goes into more detail while giving tips on how to eliminate interruptions, simplify tasks and so much more.

I Can’t Believe It

I can’t even tell you how many giveaways and contests I have entered on other blogs and sites hoping to win something cute, fun, or useful. And when hundreds of other people enter into the same giveaway, it lessened my chance of winning and I have yet to win anything. That is until now. I can’t even describe the shock and excitement that overwhelmed me when I found out I won a contest I entered about a month ago on The Inspired Room. My fingers had been crossed ever since wanting to win one of the three $200 gift cards Melissa was giving away to TJ Maxx or HomeGoods. I am so excited to go shopping! I am lucky enough to have both TJ Maxx and HomeGoods nearby. Thank you so much, Melissa!

My entry was our Despairing Bedroom… which has gotten a bit better and a bit worst since the entry a month ago. It has continued to be the storage room as I decluttered our house from attic to floor and collected piles of stuff for our yard sale a few weekends ago. Then my craft stuff spewed into the main part of the room as I pre-washed and ironed all my fabrics getting ready for some projects. Hey, it had to get worst before it got better right?

Even though the winner of The Inspired Room contest wasn’t announced until now, I have been motivated by it to change the condition of our room. We had a maximum budget of zero dollars, so I came up with some creative ways to upgrade just a tad. First, we painted over Labor Day weekend using gift cards redeemed through our credit cards.

And one night, while in the shower where I get my best ideas, I thought it would be fun to make a photo studio in our room but disguise it through decorations. I know, it doesn’t sound nice. But it will be, I promise. Our room has the best natural light of all the rooms in our house. It also has the largest walls for backdrops. Perfect for a little DIY home studio makeshift. However, I didn’t want a rod and backdrops hanging from the walls of our room when the studio part is not being used. That’s when I dug into my creative juices a little deeper and came up with the idea consisting knobs, bamboo, frames, and ribbons. It’s in the works right now and, don’t worry, it will be posted when I’m done.

Now, with a $200 gift card, our room get the makeover it desperately needed. Once again, thank you The Inspired Room! There will be transformation updates and before/after pictures coming your way.

Crochet Clips Giveaway

I’m excited! This is my first giveaway. I hope it is well received. A couple weeks ago I designed two crochet flowers. A friend recently asked me to teach some women how to crochet flowers and make hair clips. She saw my girls fashioning the hair clips I made them last year. Of course… I’d love to.

At first, I designed the star lily and realized it would be too complicated to teach since most of the women have absolutely no crocheting experience. So I came up with a simple flower, the pansy. Anyway, since I had my crocheting supplies out, I decided to make a few extra and give them away. Here’s the pansy flower tutorial.

I started this blog two and a half months ago and it has been two and a half months of hard work getting it launched. But I am so grateful for all who visit Simply Modern Mom. So here’s my thank you.

I know hair clips are for girls… so if you don’t know have girlies, perhaps you want it for yourself, even to fashion on a shirt? Or I’m sure you know someone with a girl to give as a gift at the next baby shower or birthday party?
