Simply Said… Mari of Small for Big

In Products, Simply Said on March 11, 2010 at 9:00 am

Mari is a friend I met in the blog world. We haven’t actually met in person, but it’s all the same in the blogosphere right? Anyway, Mari is an expert in the toy industry. She has worked in the toy industry designing toys and accessories for over 12 years. She also writes a blog called Small for Big featuring the latest toys, kids decor and accessories. I asked her to share with us the top 10 trends she is seeing in the toy industry in 2010. This is Mari and she simply said…

Now that it’s March, lots of toy manufacturers are breathing a huge sigh of relief (unless you’re in sales, where the ball is finally rolling). The big trade shows for 2010 are all wrapped up and the new products revealed. Though consumers won’t see a lot of the results for months yet, we can still get some sneak peeks!

The good news? Current trends may fall on opposite ends, but they appear to be balancing each other out. On the one hand tech is growing, but at the same time wood toys are exploding. While online toys are still important, there is also a big resurgence in toys that spark the imagination the old-fashioned way. Next week I will be highlighting some of my favorite new toys debuting this year on my site, Small for Big.

1. Eco-friendly. No surprise, right? But what is new is that we are finally seeing multiple companies, large and small, acknowledging this movement. Now we can find everything from eco-plastic made of sawdust such as Sprig Toys to battery-less light-up toys. Stuffed animals and dolls are joining the mix too with a bigger range of recycled fabrics and eco stuffing materials.

2. Wood toys. We are seeing to an exploding range of wooden toy options. No, really. There seems to be wood toys everywhere these days with the number of brands and variety of toys growing all the time. It is a great time to get into wood. Melissa & Doug and Haba are just a few examples.

3. Forest themes. Birds, owls and rabbits. Oh my! This trend is combining several things in one. It pulls from the retro 70’s vibe we are all loving. But it also ties right into the environmental trend as well. Plus, it is providing a great theme alternative to the multitude of garden, jungle/zoo and ocean themes out there already.

4. Classic Toys. Nostalgia is a huge factor with a lot of product trends right now. It has been going strong in toys for some time. Companies are feeding on a consumer’s growing need to connect with the product. They do it by either tapping old brands that parents remember from their own childhoods or highlighting the handmade, homegrown aspects of a new product. Just look at the resurgence in handmade goods, and the interest in small companies with a personal story.

5. Tech toys. Technology and toys is growing in multiple directions. First, they are smaller in size. Just like flat-screen TVs, toys are using more complicated gadgetry in much smaller packages. For example, RC vehicles are seeing some really cool advances. Second, video cameras are being added to everything.

6. Virtual + reality. While we love what we can do online, in the world of toys it is all about the combo. Whether taking a toy with you in the car, around the yard or to the computer, the big brands are trying their hardest to make their toys impossible to put down in any situation. Just look at the upcoming Fisher Price iXL. It’s a touch screen educational gaming device (pictured below).

7. Focus on affordability. Luckily toy companies want you to buy their products. So they’re realizing now is the time to focus on the affordable toys, not the $300 horse. Though you may not notice it directly, lots of new introductions this year are focusing on an under $30 price tag.

8. Multi-functionality. Directly tied to affordability, toy concepts are working harder for you than ever before. Expect to see more toys that do multiple things for a variety of age ranges. This way you can get one toy that will last you and your wallet longer.

{image by Playskool}

9. Active playing. Traditionally “active play” refers to the great outdoors. Or at least indoor toys that make your kids wiggle and bounce. This year I’m seeing it used to encompass all kinds of activity-focused toys– crafts, science, construction, brain games and such. A lot of hands-on brain activity helps balance all of those tech and online toys.

{image by Crayola}

10. Construction Innovation – Connected to active playing, I’m seeing some crazy new options in the world of building blocks and construction toys. Though few of them will never rival Lego’s monopoly and versatility, many of them are amazing mind benders and imagination generators.

Friday’s 5 at 5: Bunk Beds

In Friday's 5 at 5, Products on January 22, 2010 at 5:00 am

I am a bit eager to bunk Elle and Kaye. I was looking at some bunk beds last weekend and found my favorite five. Well, the pink one was actually Kaye’s favorite because it’s pink. Click on images to see where I found them.

Friday’s 5 at 5: My Christmas Wishlist

In Friday's 5 at 5, Products on December 4, 2009 at 5:00 am

I always have a hard time with my Christmas list. It is difficult for me to distinguish a difference between what I want and what I need. Maybe there’s not much of a difference. Ha.

No. 1: Letterpress by Lifestyle Crafts. I watched the tutorials, read some reviews and I think this would be the perfect introduction into letterpress for me. It is simple to use and extremely affordable as far as letterpresses go. I just think about all the cute cards and paper stuff I can make with it. My mind is going wild.

No. 2: Necklaces by Lisa Leonard. She is all the rage right now and you can see why. I have tried to win one of her jewelry pieces from every giveaway out there. No luck. One day, I will have to own the Be Still necklace. I’m quite found of the family crest, too.

No. 3: Magic Mouse by Apple. Uh, yeah. My computer is really not that old, 2 to be exact. But the mouse is all ready not working well. It’s mainly the scroll ball and the pointer has a mind of its own. Maybe one too many licks by Elle (she’s 10 months). This takes care of the scroll ball problem and its wireless.

No. 4: Ekby hensvik by Ikea. I have been looking for white wall-mount shelves for our master bedroom. A few of these would do.

No. 5: White photography lighting. Our house doesn’t get much natural lighting inside. One of the few things I don’t like about it. So when I try to take pictures of things inside, it’s impossible to get good lighting without using flash. And I’m not a flash person. Couldn’t find a good picture for this one (ironic).

**This giveaway is closed. Thanks to all who entered.**

I know, I announced a Simply Modern Mom store like months ago. And many of you have been asking about it. Well, it got held back by more pressing projects – like the Winter Days Giveaways going now, guest appearances on other blogs, Nathan finishing up his semester, house projects, so on and so forth. Then there’s the fact that I am one of those people who does a ton of research before making a commitment such as opening an online store. But it is finally here. Not completely done since I have other products to add that I have to finish up first. Nonetheless, it’s up and open as of today.

May I present to you… The Gift Box by Simply Modern Mom. And the best part is…  At The Gift Box, every gift comes with a box. Or some kind of gift wrapping. That’s right. We eliminated troubles of gift wrapping by providing it at no additional cost.

http://thegiftbox.simplymodernmom.com

or the STORE page in the menu above

To celebrate it’s grand opening, I am participating in Sew, Mama, Sew’s Giveaway Day going on today. It’s a day of giveaways and they have a list of all those participating at their blog. But the actual giveaway is on each person’s individual sites. So here’s mine! Yes, the Winter Days Giveaways is still going on but you get an additional giveaway today!

mustaches

I’m giving away a great stocking stuffer…  A set of 3 mustaches to ONE winner, you get to pick which styles you would like. This giveaway ends Sunday, Dec. 6 at 10 p.m. This one is only for those within the U.S.

To enter, all you have to do is give me an honest critique of The Gift Box – what you like, what you don’t like. This would require you to go to The Gift Box and check it out. No critiques? Then let me know which of my crafts (you can check out my MADE page to see them all) you would like to see in my store. That’s it. Good luck!

In Search of a Winter Coat

winter coats

I had a hard time with this one. I didn’t realized I liked winter coats so much. I am a sucker for big buttons. And the colors, I am the two extremes. I like the neutral colors and the bold colors. What do you like in a winter coat?

Look what came in the mail for me. At first I was giddy that I was getting almond in the mail. I have to admit. I was disappointed when I opened the tin and it was empty. But the cute little note and the fun tin design made me happy again. Now I just need some almonds to fill the tin. It fits the perfect serving size of 23 almonds in that beautiful tin. Great for tossing a little snack in my purse. Next to all of my kids’ snacks.

This Week’s Thrift Store Adventure

more bed sheets

Without the rain this time, I made it to a couple thrift stores. I had a list of specific things I was hoping to find:

  1. 11″ x 14″ frames needed four
  2. more bedsheets for fabric
  3. a mat for the trunk of my car

I got it all except the fourth frame and a few other goodies. I have some ideas and projects in mind. I’ve spent the rest of this week running errands, practically everywhere imaginable. Dealing with a sick baby, Elle, poor girl. I spent most of yesterday doing laundry and pre-washing all my fabric and bed sheets. Today… iron, iron, iron. Anyone have a special trick to ironing and organizing fabric?

Rain Rain Go Away

In Products on September 21, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Last week it came in the mail… 50 percent off coupon to a local thrift store. Yes, thrift store is supposed to be cheap and that’s why it’s even better when you have the 50 percent off coupon. The coupon is only good for today. So I met my mom there and we shopped the day away. Almost stopped by the rain, thunderstorm, flood combo we are having here. However, I was determined. Who cares if they shut down roads because the water was getting into people’s cars? I’ll just go another way.

And look at what I found…

vintage sheets

feathered hat

I haven’t decided what to do with those twin size vintage flat sheets yet. But the hat… well, I’m just looking for some fake mustaches then I’m setting up a photo booth. I also bought a Banana Republic white linen skirt – brand new, original price tag attached (retailed $68) – for $6. It was just my size, too. And a second white linen skirt from Chaps that was way cute. That one for $2.50. Not too bad. I have another 50 percent off coupon for next Monday. Hopefully it won’t be raining.

Break Up is the new album by Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson. I love it. Never heard Scarlett Johansson sing until now and I’m quite impressed. And I have always been a fan of Pete Yorn. Click on the album image above for a taste of this amazing album. It’s the music video to their song “Relator”. It’s probably my favorite song of the album.

How cool is this? The best part about it is there is a kit that turns the stroller into a trike. My girls would be stylin’ babes on one of those… if only I could get Kaye hop on a bike and pedal.
