Back Into the Swing of Things

In Random on March 8, 2010 at 9:00 am

Back to our regular programming… It’s been a while hasn’t it? Thanks for being so patient with me and going along with my around the world Education Week where we spent two weeks learning about what it’s like to live in other countries. It was also interesting to read what motherhood was like around the world, too.

Education Week was quickly followed by the Over-Used Recipe Swap. Although we didn’t reach my goal of 365 recipes in one week, we still collected 169 recipes from all of you and other bloggers who I featured throughout the week. I think that was a pretty amazing feat. Thanks to all who participated and helped spread the word. I am excited to have new recipes to try.

During the time of the Education Week and recipe swap event, I suffered through some technical difficulties… I dropped my iPhone in the toilet. The following week, the hard drive in my computer died. And this last weekend I came down with a head cold that I am still overcoming. The latter affected my mental abilities which in turn affected my technical abilities. Thanks to my technically inclined husband and the Apple Geniuses, my phone and computer were fixed rather quickly. And the Apple Geniuses even threw in one of these as a fix to my previous one with an inoperative scroll ball…

On a happier note. Sarah of Better Way Moms interviewed me last week about Simply Modern Mom. If you want to learn a little bit about the background of SMM, hop over and read.

Anyway, enough about me. How about we get back to some lists and tutorials? I have a tutorial for you Wednesday. A sewing project. Just in time for the picnic season. I also have some traveling tips for you since travel season is quickly approaching. And I won’t forget about spring cleaning and Easter that will be here before we know it.

» Tell me… Are you ready for spring? Is it defrosting where you live? I don’t think I can hold back my spring fever any longer.

Don’t Forget… Over-used Recipe Swap

In Food, Over-used Recipes on February 26, 2010 at 8:00 am

Over-used Recipes Swap

Don’t you forget about the exciting event we have coming next week. It’s the Over-used Recipe Swap where we all share our over-used recipes in exchange for other people’s over-used recipes. It’s that recipe you made so many times that your family is sick of it. Or perhaps it is that one recipe you take pleasure in cooking. And it’s that recipe that reminds you of your mother’s or grandmother’s cooking.

Our goal is to gather at least 365 recipes in ONE WEEK. This way, we have enough new recipes to last a whole year! I’m all about planning ahead. So are you in or not? Start typing out your recipes. We will have a link up Monday morning. You will have Monday through Sunday (March 1-7) to link your recipe from your blog.

And there’s more… I will be posting several over-used recipes from other famous bloggers and some of my blogger friends. Won’t it be fun to see what they eat in their household?

Minor details:

  • If your recipe is already on your blog, great. Just come and link it up on Monday.
  • If you don’t have a blog or your blog is private, that’s OK. You can leave your recipes in the comments.
  • Please take the time to double check your typing. Don’t want someone to try your recipe and accidentally use a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon.
  • My lovely international readers. I always have you in mind. Sorry most recipes will be in wacky U.S. measurements. You are welcomed to post your recipes in metric measurements. We can all convert measurements using an online conversion calculator.

If it helps, take a button as a reminder and share this announcement (copy code below for the button above). I’m sure you know of a few people also looking for some new recipes to add to their collection. Get them in on the fun. See you Monday!

Over-Used Recipe Week 2010

In Events, Food, Over-used Recipes on February 19, 2010 at 8:30 am

I cook. A lot. I’m not a chef. I’m a mom. And I often feel like I cook the same recipes over and over again. You know the feeling. Too mundane. Then I talk to my friends. They know the feeling too. Then came the idea…

What if we exchanged our over-used recipes? Over-used? You know, the one meal that you cook over and over again because it is easy and you’ve made it so many times you don’t even have to measure the ingredients. Oooh, that recipe.

So here it is…

Over-used Recipes Swap

It’s like a recipe swap. I am hoping to collect over 365 recipes from all of you. That’s enough new recipes to cover all of us for a year. It’ll come to you in a linking party way. Meaning you blog your over-used recipes, then link it here beginning March 1. You don’t have a blog? Leave the recipe in the comments. That’ll work too.

And here is an added bonus… I enlisted some “famous” bloggers and some of my blogger friends to share with us their over-used recipes. Don’t you want to know what they eat all the time? I do!

Take a button if you want and share this announcement (copy code below). Remember, the goal is 365 recipes. Let’s get cookin’!

A Phone Interview

In Featured on February 18, 2010 at 8:35 pm

I think it’s true. I believe my voice will be on TV tomorrow, as in Friday, Feb. 19. At least in Utah it will be.  Perhaps my voice attached to my photo? Brooke and Darin, the hosts of KSL Studio 5 wants to interview me about Project 52: Date Night. Oh boy. Did I mention it’s going to be a live phone interview? Phone interview because they’re in Utah, I’m… well, I’m not in Utah.

I hesitated to tell you because I’m hoping you won’t listen to me make a fool of myself on TV if you’re in Utah. But if you do watch it because you’re nice, please cheer for me as I’ll be nervous. I’m not used to being on the receiving side of an interview. I’m used to being the one asking questions from my days working as a journalist. And back when I was studying journalism in college, we had to do radio stories for a campus station. That’s when I learned I do not have the voice to be on radio.

All I’m saying is… thanks. Thanks for all  your support. I have the best readers in the blogosphere.

Now off to warm up my phone voice.

P.S. If anyone in Utah can record this for me, somehow in digital form so you can email it to me. Unless you are willing to send it to me in another form. I will be so grateful. There may be a little something, something for you if you do. (Not to bribe my readers.) My parents and Nathan’s parents (none of which live in Utah) would like to see it. I don’t know if I could watch it myself. But, you know, for them… Email me if you’re willing to tiffany{at}simplymodernmom{dot}com.

Education Week: Cultures & Olympics

In Education Week on February 15, 2010 at 8:00 am

It’s Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver. I love the Olympics. I can proudly say I have attended Olympic events before. Check that off my bucket list. To me, Olympics is a time where the world come together. So many amazing stories to be told as athletes perform with one goal in mind – to do their best.

In celebration of the Olympics, I thought it would be fun for us to learn about other countries. What its like to live elsewhere. And what we can learn from mothers around the world. Did you know that Simply Modern Mom has 19 percent international readers? I’ve asked a few SMM readers to share with us what it’s like to be there and not here.

This Education Week will actually lasts two weeks – the duration of the Winter Olympics. Also, throughout the week I’ll post ideas to get children involved in learning culture and in the Olympics.

Even our date night last week was Olympic related. More on that tomorrow at the Project 52: Date Night linking party. Are you ready for it?

Tell me… Did you watch the opening ceremony Friday night? What did you think?

Project 52: Date Nights Announcement

In Project 52: Date Nights on January 14, 2010 at 9:01 am

I am so impressed by the response from everyone about Project 52: Date Nights. Some of you are a bit hesitant. That’s OK. It is quite the commitment to do a date each week. Others were eager to join. Thank you. The outpour of emails, blogs and comments about Project 52: Date Nights has been incredible. Thank you for spreading the word.

Some of you have been blogging along with me showing me dates you have been doing with your special someone. I love it when you leave a link so I can see what you have been doing. So I decided to finally use one of those linky lists to make Project 52: Date Nights more interactive. Beginning next Tuesday at the end of each of my Project 52: Date Nights posts there will be a linky list for you to link to your blog about your date. We can all support each other. Cheer each other on throughout the year. Exchange ideas. Meet new friends. How ’bout it?

Don’t have a blog? That is A-OK. You can still tell us about your dates in the comments. Want to share with me, but not the general public? Email me at tiffany{at}simplymodernmom{dot}com. We need ways to communicate. And I am opening up all sorts of ways for you to communicate with me and with each other.

Also, please spread the word about Project 52: Date Nights. The more people we have to join and follow along, the more ideas we have to exchange with each other. The more support you get to keep you going throughout the year. Let’s show each other some love.

Sorry, but I do have to lay down some general rules and guidelines for the Project 52: Date Nights linky list.

  • Keep it clean and family friendly. This is a family friendly site. Anything inappropriate will be deleted.
  • It needs to be a date. Not your latest projects or pictures of your beautiful children. I do love reading about your projects and learning about your family. But this linky is for date nights and date nights only. It is for us to exchange date night ideas.
  • Link to a specific blog post about your date that week. Don’t just link to your site’s home page. It needs to be the direct link to the post. Anything not directly linked to the post will be deleted.
  • Link back to Simply Modern Mom or put the Project 52: Date Nights button on your site. It’s common courtesy. Please be nice.

Project 52 Date Nights

That’s it. We begin next Tuesday. Get your date posts ready!

Autism Speaks Benefit at Allora Handmade

In Random on January 13, 2010 at 9:00 am

Today is a great day for Autism Speaks. Jessica of Allora Handmade contacted me a while ago telling me of a generous benefit she put together for her nephew Jonathan’s 10th birthday. I will let Jessica take it from here…

“[Jonathan] was diagnosed 8 years ago with Autism, and that diagnosis has drastically changed the life of my sister and all the rest of our family – in so many ways. Every Christmas and birthday I struggle with what to get him that he will really enjoy. Since buying gifts for Jonathan is so difficult, this year for his birthday I plan on having an Autism Awareness benefit sale in my shop. I will load up my shop and from January 13 – 15, I will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to Autism Speaks. I figure the best gift I can give him (and his family) is a chunk of change to help solve the puzzle that is autism.”

Please help support Autism Speaks and Allora Handmade by making purchases at Jessica’s Etsy shop beginning today and ending on Friday. And for every $10 you spend you will be entered to win a $40 gift certificate towards a future purchase at Allora Handmade.

Project 52: Date Nights

In Project 52: Date Nights on December 31, 2009 at 9:00 am

I am excited about this announcement. And it involves you. Yes, you! I want you to participate and report back.

We approached that time of the year where we think about new goals and projects for 2010. I have been contemplating doing a Project 365 myself. Project 365? Set a goal to do something every day for a year all the while blogging about it or recording it somewhere somehow. You know, Julie & Julia. Then the more I thought about it, 365 is a bit too much for my schedule. If I am going to commit to the project, it has to be doable. So I am turning my Project 365 into Project 52. Cutting it down to just once a week. That’s feasible.

The project. I recently read an article in a magazine about a couple’s experience having date nights at home. Hum… sounds interesting. Nathan and I will celebrate our 6th anniversary in 2010 and sad to say, we have neglected consistent date night ever since Kaye was born over 3 years ago. We have the same excuses many of you also face. Nathan is in graduate school most evenings. We don’t want to find and pay for a babysitter every week. Our current financial situation leaves little allowance for date nights. We are too busy. We can’t think of anything to do. The house is a mess. We are tired. The excuses continue.

After reading the article, Nathan and I decided this was something we need to work on in 2010. We need to get better at setting aside time to enrich our marriage. And now, I introduce you to our Project 52: Date Nights. More specifically in house date nights, for us. The main points are for us to be creative, cheap and spend quality time together. Nathan and I have committed to do date night each week with the following criteria…

  • Every Friday night from 9 -10 p.m. is our date night. We usually have both kids in bed by 8:30 p.m.
  • Majority of the time the dates will be at home so we don’t need babysitters.
  • We rotate being in charge of date nights on a monthly basis.
  • Can’t do the same thing twice in one month.
  • Dates need to be free most of the time. If not free, then under a budget of $30. Cheaper than if we went out.
  • No children allowed.
  • Must create a date-like atmosphere. No frumpy clothes or pajamas. Make it a special event. Mind the details. But most of all, keep it simple.

Not only are we going to have date night beginning January 1st, we will be blogging about it here on SMM. Every Tuesday we will recap what we did for our date night the previous Friday. You will get a he said/she said critiques of the date.

Here is how YOU are involved. Yes, we want you to participate in Project 52: Date Nights with us! Whether you are in a relationship, engaged or married, I want you to commit to having weekly date nights with your special someone. I want the both of you to take this pledge. Read it, fill it out, sign it and post it somewhere you can see frequently. A little hesitant? Don’t worry, you can join Project 52: Date Nights any time.

Take the Project 52: Date Nights Pledge

Then check in with us every Tuesday for ideas, comments, feedbacks from our Project 52: Date Nights and yours. We want to hear from you and what creative ideas you came up with for date nights. Make comments and report how your date nights went each week. By the way, this is a family friendly site. So all dates and ideas will be appropriate for all ages. And please keep your comments family friendly too.

The pledge. Here is the Project 52: Date Nights pledge in PDF form for you to print out. Print one out for yourself. And maybe a few extras for your friends or family members to get them in on the fun. Discuss the project with your special someone. Talk about what is feasible for the two of you. Set a date and time to help you pencil that date in your calendars. Come up with a few criteria of your own. If you don’t want to do in house date nights, then plan going out date nights. The two important points here are be creative and keep it simple.

So… are you in or not? Make sure to involve your friends and families. Get them to take the pledge with their special someone. The more couples we get to do this, the more ideas and motivations we get to support each other in Project 52: Date Nights. While doing Project 52: Date Nights with us, if you come up with great ideas let me know so I can feature you on SMM! Come on! It’s only once a week. Only 52 dates to last you the whole year. Let’s do this!

Redefining Simply Modern Mom

In Random on December 30, 2009 at 9:00 am

Someone: You have a blog?

Me: Yes, it’s called Simply Modern Mom.

Someone: Cool. What is it about?

Me: Well…

If I have a hard time defining my blog. I’m sure you have a harder time telling people about my blog, that’s if you tell people about my blog. Simply Modern Mom launched 5 months ago and it started out as a place for me to share some of the projects I do for myself and others. You know, crafty stuff. And I still love that. But having met other great blogger and online friends, I found a greater need for Simply Modern Mom. I’m redefining Simply Modern Mom.

Simple. For the modern mom.

That’s right. Simply Modern Mom is a place for modern moms to collaborate and discover ways to simplify their lives. It’s for moms with any kind of lifestyle, whether you are working full-time, working part-time, working from home, a homemaker, a crafty mom, a PTA mom, a single mom, a military mom, mom with older kids, mom with younger kids, a first time mom or one-of-a-kind mom.

Nothing is going to change about the current content of this site. I will still post tutorials and other craft projects I am constantly doing. You may all ready notice that I try to simplify all my projects. Easy enough that anyone can do them. I will still make tons of lists giving tips and ideas of how to simplify motherhood, organize the home and entertain the children. I hope to be better at posting back to basics tips.

So what will be changing about Simply Modern Mom? I will be adding new things to the site. First off, there is a project I want EVERYONE (that means YOU) to participate with me. I will announce that tomorrow. Yes, you’ll have to wait.

Second, I am doing another segment on SMM where I want to get to know my readers and make some more blogging friends. In the 5 months of blogging on Simply Modern Mom, I have made some amazing blogging friends. I will be featuring some of them, some friends I haven’t met yet and some of you! I have a degree in journalism and one of the reasons why I studied journalism in college was because I believe everyone has a story to tell. I love hearing people’s stories and learn from their experiences. This segment will be called Simply Said. More on this later. Just be excited.

I do hope you like the changes. Remember, tomorrow there will be a fun announcement. Comment and let me know if you have ideas or suggestions. I love feedbacks and I do take the time to read every one of your comments. You can also email me at tiffany{at}simplymodernmom{dot}com.

**This giveaway is closed. Thanks to all who entered.**

I know, I announced a Simply Modern Mom store like months ago. And many of you have been asking about it. Well, it got held back by more pressing projects – like the Winter Days Giveaways going now, guest appearances on other blogs, Nathan finishing up his semester, house projects, so on and so forth. Then there’s the fact that I am one of those people who does a ton of research before making a commitment such as opening an online store. But it is finally here. Not completely done since I have other products to add that I have to finish up first. Nonetheless, it’s up and open as of today.

May I present to you… The Gift Box by Simply Modern Mom. And the best part is…  At The Gift Box, every gift comes with a box. Or some kind of gift wrapping. That’s right. We eliminated troubles of gift wrapping by providing it at no additional cost.

http://thegiftbox.simplymodernmom.com

or the STORE page in the menu above

To celebrate it’s grand opening, I am participating in Sew, Mama, Sew’s Giveaway Day going on today. It’s a day of giveaways and they have a list of all those participating at their blog. But the actual giveaway is on each person’s individual sites. So here’s mine! Yes, the Winter Days Giveaways is still going on but you get an additional giveaway today!

mustaches

I’m giving away a great stocking stuffer…  A set of 3 mustaches to ONE winner, you get to pick which styles you would like. This giveaway ends Sunday, Dec. 6 at 10 p.m. This one is only for those within the U.S.

To enter, all you have to do is give me an honest critique of The Gift Box – what you like, what you don’t like. This would require you to go to The Gift Box and check it out. No critiques? Then let me know which of my crafts (you can check out my MADE page to see them all) you would like to see in my store. That’s it. Good luck!

Project Spasms and an Announcement

In Random on October 28, 2009 at 9:00 am

yarn projects

I am experiencing project spasms. I am being attacked by too many projects. Doing a little bit here and a little bit there is not helping because I’m not actually accomplishing any particular project. Leading to an even worst feeling of incompletion at the end of the day. Maybe it is also because I am working on Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, and baby shower gifts for people left and right.

On top of that I am trying to open an online shop. Yup, you heard it right. I’m making the leap to sell some of my items online. That’s the big announcement for the day. It seems that there are people out there who actually like some of the things I make. I have never sold any of it before. So I’m not sure if anyone is interested enough to want to purchase anything from me. But hey, you gotta try, right?

Don’t worry, I will let you know when the shop opens. There are a lot to be done before that happens. However, I did set a deadline for myself to get the shop up and running in November, you know before the holidays. So I would love it if you had some advice for me about selling handmade crafts online. I’m a newbie and could use all the advice.

Thanks for supporting Simply Modern Mom and telling your friends about me. Now back to work.

I Can’t Believe It

In Giveaway on October 2, 2009 at 8:48 am
{via The Inspired Room}

{via The Inspired Room}

I can’t even tell you how many giveaways and contests I have entered on other blogs and sites hoping to win something cute, fun, or useful. And when hundreds of other people enter into the same giveaway, it lessened my chance of winning and I have yet to win anything. That is until now. I can’t even describe the shock and excitement that overwhelmed me when I found out I won a contest I entered about a month ago on The Inspired Room. My fingers had been crossed ever since wanting to win one of the three $200 gift cards Melissa was giving away to TJ Maxx or HomeGoods. I am so excited to go shopping! I am lucky enough to have both TJ Maxx and HomeGoods nearby. Thank you so much, Melissa!

My entry was our Despairing Bedroom… which has gotten a bit better and a bit worst since the entry a month ago. It has continued to be the storage room as I decluttered our house from attic to floor and collected piles of stuff for our yard sale a few weekends ago. Then my craft stuff spewed into the main part of the room as I pre-washed and ironed all my fabrics getting ready for some projects. Hey, it had to get worst before it got better right?

Even though the winner of The Inspired Room contest wasn’t announced until now, I have been motivated by it to change the condition of our room. We had a maximum budget of zero dollars, so I came up with some creative ways to upgrade just a tad. First, we painted over Labor Day weekend using gift cards redeemed through our credit cards.

And one night, while in the shower where I get my best ideas, I thought it would be fun to make a photo studio in our room but disguise it through decorations. I know, it doesn’t sound nice. But it will be, I promise. Our room has the best natural light of all the rooms in our house. It also has the largest walls for backdrops. Perfect for a little DIY home studio makeshift. However, I didn’t want a rod and backdrops hanging from the walls of our room when the studio part is not being used. That’s when I dug into my creative juices a little deeper and came up with the idea consisting knobs, bamboo, frames, and ribbons. It’s in the works right now and, don’t worry, it will be posted when I’m done.

Now, with a $200 gift card, our room get the makeover it desperately needed. Once again, thank you The Inspired Room! There will be transformation updates and before/after pictures coming your way.
