Intriguing Sites: Beyond Snapshots

In Intriguing Sites, Photography on February 18, 2010 at 8:00 am

Many of us fantasize about the ability to take superb photographs but feel limited by our lack of knowledge, skill or equipment. Myself included. I am lucky enough to have a nice DSLR camera. But the knowledge and skill part is where I fall short. My photography experiences includes working one summer with a wedding photographer and taking a film photography and black and white developing class. Both happened while I was in high school. Everything else is pretty much self taught, practice and reading digital photography blogs.

That’s why when I discovered Beyond Snapshots, I was thrilled. The blog only began January 2010, but Rachel and Peta (the two masterminds and photographers behind Beyond Snapshots) has all ready taught me so much. They are sharing photography secrets and tips to help others take pictures beyond the auto mode. My favorite part about the site thus far? The Spotted segment where they take someone’s photograph and provide constructive criticisms. I’m learning how to really look at photographs in an artistic way. At the same time, it is improving my photography. Thanks Rachel and Peta for sharing your talent with us!

Intriguing Sites: Men in Aprons

In Intriguing Sites on February 3, 2010 at 9:00 am

I love it when my husband cooks. He may not be a gourmet chef, but don’t mind getting break from cooking. It’s a rare occasion when we eat out, so I am in the kitchen at least three times a day, seven days a week. It is exhausting planning meals, getting groceries, searching for recipes, preparing the meals, cooking the meals and cleaning up after meals.

Men in Aprons is a fun site with cleaver cooking ideas and recipes for men. But I think there are things from that site I would like to try. If anything, it makes cooking a little more of a lighthearted task. It’s for male cooks at any level whether he needs to learn to how make scrambled eggs or find tips to grilling. Ziploc omelette, Hatch Chile Baked Mac & Cheese or Mission Moon Rocks.

Hey guys! Here’s a Valentine’s Day idea… Make your wife a special Valentine’s Day dinner by using Men in Aprons. You’re welcome.

Ladies, does your husband/boyfriend cook? What is your favorite dish he makes?

My Bullet List on The Mother Huddle

In Featured, Project 52: Date Nights on January 28, 2010 at 9:00 am

I couldn’t believe Destri of The Mother Huddle invited me to guest blog for their Bullet List. I mean, it seemed like it was a thing for the elite. Only amazing bloggers and designers have gone before me doing the Bullet List. So, WOW!

Destri asked me to write a list of at-home date ideas. Of course! I was all over the opportunity to make another list. You know how I’m an avid list maker. It was nice to come up with ideas that I could use throughout the remainder of the year for our Project 52: Date Nights. Therefore, I highly suggest going over to The Mother Huddle for my list of 16 at-home dates. That’s enough dates to last you 4 months.

Thanks, Destri for giving me the honor of being on The Mother Huddle!

Simply Said… Cat from Designing Moms

In Simply Said on January 21, 2010 at 9:00 am

A while ago, Cat asked me to guest blog on Designing Moms. What a honor that was for me because I had been a follower of Designing Moms for a while. Cat herself is an amazing designer creating some of the most beautiful paper products and stationary. Today, we are learning a bit about Cat and her designs. Cat simply said…

My name is Cat and I design a line of stationery goods named “Cat Seto“. I run my design studio and shop in the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco which is just a few blocks from the famed “Crooked Street”. On any given day, you can probably find me climbing up a hill, doodling at the studio or wolfing down a fish burrito at Nick’s Tacos. I also write a blog called Designing Moms. We are all designers…stationery, cake, textile, editorial, toy and many more. We blog about our lives balancing design, creative projects and little ones. I feel absolutely inspired and honored to be in the presence of such amazing women and mothers!

How would you describe your style of design?

For the first couple of years I would say vintage chic, but I am obsessed with retro/mod patterns as well and find myself mixing and matching those elements with all of my designs.

Where do you go to be inspired?

I’m finding myself more and more inspired by people vs. things lately. I still get completely psyched when I see amazing storefronts or the vintage green muni cars rumbling up and down Market Street…but just the other week I was looking up wild flowers in the middle of the night after meeting an elderly woman at the grocery store who studied horticulture all her life. She was just adorable.

What is a simplifying trick you use in your own life?

You’re asking the wrong person–I always find myself biting off more than I can chew! Although I’ve learned that if I have to spin a lot of plates, to make sure they are all plates that I want to spin.

How do you inspire your children to be creative?

I can only learn from my parents who were both instrumental in making sure they were cheerleaders in my creative pursuits without influencing me with their own personal tastes and opinions. I grew up in a small house with a big family and creativity was always my own “thing”…a place to retreat and explore independently.

What is a skill you would love to learn?

Can I name two? Sewing and rock climbing. What a way to conquer aversions to needles and heights!

Intriguing Sites: Poladroid.net

In Intriguing Sites, Photography on January 20, 2010 at 9:00 am

A series of thoughts and searches on Google led me to this awesome site that I am psyched about. It’s Poladroid.net. Nathan was telling me last year about how Polaroid is sooo early ’90s and the company is struggling to survive. I refused to put down Polaroid that way. Although I was not an 80’s child, I did own one Polaroid camera. The Polaroid i-Zone Pocket. I had it when I was in high school and I loved it. It had little thumbnail size Polaroid film. The best part: You could purchase film that had a sticky back. Picture turned sticker. Awesome.

How can you not like the click sound when you take the picture. Watching the thick film come out. Shaking it to make it develop faster. Anticipating the candid picture to magically appear in that square box. No other experience like it.

I kept my Polaroid i-Zone throughout college. Had it even when Nathan and I were first married. Finally he convinced me that I couldn’t find film for it anymore in stores. I got rid of it. Still wish I had it.

So, boy, was I glad to find Poladroid.net. Download their free application. Drag digital photos into the Polaroid on your desktop. Wait and watch it develop right before your eyes. Love it. Love it so much that I am dedicating a Tumblr site to it. Remember my goal to practice photography in 2010? This will help. See personal photos of my family at tiffanybird.tumblr.com.

I recommend visiting Poladroid.net. Download the application. Use it. Love it. Donate to support the Polaroid Project.

I love making new blogger friends. So many of you have been so generous in helping to spread the word about Project 52: Date Nights, showing off my master bedroom makeover and sharing my tutorials and DIY projects. I haven’t met many of you, but can I just say how much I love you? A bit much? OK, how about I just call you friends?

Now check out these amazing sites and people…

FedEx started a blog called Out of Office. They contacted me wanting to feature Project 52: Date Nights in one of their posts. Awesome!

Australia’s Craft Blog featured my Bird tree canvases in a post. Oh how I would love to be in Australia right now.

Be Different… Act Normal featured my DIY knob and frame tutorials.

Designing Moms shared my bedroom makeover. Thanks, Cat! We’ll be hearing from her soon.

Craft Gossip posted about my felt hair clip tutorial. I love craft gossiping.

Lyndsey of The Stationary Place featured my snowflakes. If you love stationary or any type of paper crafts (I do!), you have to see Lyndsey’s site.

Sew, Mama, Sew’s list of tutorials included me! Who doesn’t love Sew, Mama, Sew? I adore them. Such a great sewing community.

And I can’t forget the ever so generous Melissa at The Inspired Room who referred all her readers over to me for my big bedroom reveal. She’s the best!

Autism Speaks Benefit at Allora Handmade

In Random on January 13, 2010 at 9:00 am

Today is a great day for Autism Speaks. Jessica of Allora Handmade contacted me a while ago telling me of a generous benefit she put together for her nephew Jonathan’s 10th birthday. I will let Jessica take it from here…

“[Jonathan] was diagnosed 8 years ago with Autism, and that diagnosis has drastically changed the life of my sister and all the rest of our family – in so many ways. Every Christmas and birthday I struggle with what to get him that he will really enjoy. Since buying gifts for Jonathan is so difficult, this year for his birthday I plan on having an Autism Awareness benefit sale in my shop. I will load up my shop and from January 13 – 15, I will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to Autism Speaks. I figure the best gift I can give him (and his family) is a chunk of change to help solve the puzzle that is autism.”

Please help support Autism Speaks and Allora Handmade by making purchases at Jessica’s Etsy shop beginning today and ending on Friday. And for every $10 you spend you will be entered to win a $40 gift certificate towards a future purchase at Allora Handmade.

Intriguing Sites: Storenvy

In Intriguing Sites, The Gift Box on December 8, 2009 at 8:59 am

storenvy

Some of you noticed I am using Storenvy for my store. And others mentioned you have never heard of Storenvy. Well, they are pretty new. So I’m featuring them in my Intriguing Sites this week.

For those of you with an online store and those looking to open an online store, you will want to consider Storenvy. Here’s why. It’s free! They don’t take a percentage of your sales. They use PayPal for their financial transactions and the PayPal fee is the only thing you pay to PayPal. No transaction fee or percentage fee to Storenvy. They don’t charge to post items in your store either.

What’s the catch? Why would they do it for free? Rather than making money through charging seller fees, they hope you will use them to print shirts. That’s their main business. Storenvy offers award-winning T-shirts and merchandise printing. Store owners are not required to use them to print shirts, but if you are in that business, they hope you will use them. That’s it.

Other benefits, you can do just about what you want with your store on Storenvy. It has fully customizable storefronts for you to design it the way you want it. They have a ton of amazing store features. And just like any other online store communities, it is a fun place to shop and support online small businesses.

And look at what I found last Saturday on their main page… Yup. One of the mustaches was being featured in their home page! Mr. Hugo is in the middle under ‘New & Interesting’.

I featured Hope for Women on SMM back in August when I first discovered the Tagua bracelets. Oh, how lovely. And the more I learned about Hope for Women, the more I am amazed by what they do for women around the world.

Here’s an excerpt from their site:

Hope For Women brings premium quality, Fair Trade products created by women artisans to the mainstream marketplace. We are a socially responsible organization committed to providing sustainable employment for economically disadvantaged women worldwide. We offer products exclusively made by women so they can take control of their lives and their futures. Hope For Women is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation. Every woman is paid a fair, livable wage under safe and healthy working conditions. We aim to have the highest environmental standards in all aspects of our business, and incorporate our “green” ethic into our products, packaging, and every decision we make.

And check out their home products. I think the vase above would look great in our guest room.

Hope for Women’s giveaway will have TWO winners. The first winner will receive ONE Tagua bracelet. The second winner will receive ONE set of 4 greeting cards from the India Collection. The Tagua jewelry is made from nuts found within the seed pods of the Ivory Nut Palm, a native species of the Colombian rainforest. And the greeting cards are made of handmade “tree-free” paper faced with real pressed wild flowers and native plantings from the foothills of the Himalayas. This giveaway is only for U.S. residents.

Each bracelet is made by economically disadvantaged women artisans and their families. You can feel proud wearing this bracelet knowing it is changing and improving lives. Money collected from the bracelets also help provide incentive to protect and maintain the rainforest.

**This giveaway is closed. Thanks to all who entered.**

I know, I announced a Simply Modern Mom store like months ago. And many of you have been asking about it. Well, it got held back by more pressing projects – like the Winter Days Giveaways going now, guest appearances on other blogs, Nathan finishing up his semester, house projects, so on and so forth. Then there’s the fact that I am one of those people who does a ton of research before making a commitment such as opening an online store. But it is finally here. Not completely done since I have other products to add that I have to finish up first. Nonetheless, it’s up and open as of today.

May I present to you… The Gift Box by Simply Modern Mom. And the best part is…  At The Gift Box, every gift comes with a box. Or some kind of gift wrapping. That’s right. We eliminated troubles of gift wrapping by providing it at no additional cost.

http://thegiftbox.simplymodernmom.com

or the STORE page in the menu above

To celebrate it’s grand opening, I am participating in Sew, Mama, Sew’s Giveaway Day going on today. It’s a day of giveaways and they have a list of all those participating at their blog. But the actual giveaway is on each person’s individual sites. So here’s mine! Yes, the Winter Days Giveaways is still going on but you get an additional giveaway today!

mustaches

I’m giving away a great stocking stuffer…  A set of 3 mustaches to ONE winner, you get to pick which styles you would like. This giveaway ends Sunday, Dec. 6 at 10 p.m. This one is only for those within the U.S.

To enter, all you have to do is give me an honest critique of The Gift Box – what you like, what you don’t like. This would require you to go to The Gift Box and check it out. No critiques? Then let me know which of my crafts (you can check out my MADE page to see them all) you would like to see in my store. That’s it. Good luck!

Intriguing Sites: Pomodoro, a Giveaway & Free Book

In Giveaway, Intriguing Sites on November 19, 2009 at 9:00 am

Pomodoro

Conquer time. Every parent, working or staying at home, knows time goes too quickly when you are juggling kids and a million other things. Thanks to the mastermind of Francesco Cirillo, he developed the Pomodoro Technique. During his university studies, Francesco found himself in a slump and needed a way to focus. His solution came in the form of a tomato timer from the kitchen, pomodoro meaning tomato in Italian. This pomodoro was his time tutor. Then came the technique.

The technique is pretty simple. At the beginning of each day, go through your task list and organize according to priority. Then set your pomodoro, a timer, to 25 minutes. Work on the task for 25 minutes then take a 5 minute break. That is the gist of it. This technique allows you to stay focus on the task you are working on, keep track of interruptions and calculate exactly how long it takes you to get something done. Simple. To the point. And that is how we like it around here. The short 45-page book goes into more detail while giving tips on how to eliminate interruptions, simplify tasks and so much more.

The Free Book

Available to everyone, a free PDF version of Francesco’s book, Pomodoro Technique, is available to download. Read and apply. Click on link to download.

The Giveaway

*This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for all the entries! Find out who won here.

The Pomodoro Team is offering THREE readers their soon to be released Pomodoro Kit. Yes, you’ll be one of the firsts to get it! The kit consists of the official Pomodoro 25-minute timer, Pomodoro t-shirt, pencil, and to do today pad.

SMM Logo

I just keep making little changes here and there to improve the site. You might have noticed some of the changed over the last month or so. But let me point out some main ones to you.

  1. My logo has changed from a gray box into a red round seal.
  2. My button has changed to the image above. You can add my button to your site by copying and pasting the code in the right column on my home page.
  3. I added a MADE page to my menu above. It is a pictured list of things made by Simply Modern Mom.
  4. I jumped on the bandwagon of ‘You Might Also Like’ showing past articles you may enjoy reading.
  5. I moved all of my Follow SMM info to the column on the right. Don’t forget to add SMM to your RSS reader.
  6. I registered for a license with Creative Commons allowing you to reuse things on SMM as long as you give me credit and link back to my site. Go here for details.
  7. Finally, a new watermark for my photos. You’ll see it soon.

Although these may be little changes, I hope it makes your visit to SMM an enjoyable one where you will want to keep coming back. And please comment or contact me with feedbacks, suggestions, or ideas for SMM. I just have to say, I absolutely adore my readers!

Show and Tell

I am showing and telling (well, there’s not much to tell) all about my apron from earlier this week. It’s over at Amy Lou Who. Thought you might wanna know.

And yours truly was featured on V and Co. this week for my bandana skirts that I made eons ago. You know, the one that Kaye wouldn’t take off because she said it looked like Belle’s dress from Beauty and the Beast. I had to hide that thing now that it’s too cold and much too short for her to wear.

shoe pile

It’s a fabulous Friday all right. I also scored 11 pairs of shoes for myself and my girls today over at Payless. I know, I went overboard. But you’re talking to a shoe girl here. I warned Nathan that he shouldn’t let me go into ANY shoe store alone, even if it is Payless. He didn’t listen. So I bought one of everything. Only because I had a 50 percent off everything in the store coupon. I tried to remember the last time I bought shoes from Payless… it was middle school.

Happy Halloween!

Poloppo

My Kaye creates the cutest stick people, especially for a 3-year-old. Then I found Poloppo. Intriguing. You purchase a T-me kit where your child draws a picture on the paper provided with special markers, also provided. Then pick out a style of shirt from their catalog. And return the artwork in the pre-paid envelope, also in the kit. In a few days, your child receives his or her personally designed shirt in the mail. How fun is that? And now that it is getting into the cooler weather months, they will be offering long sleeve shirts available sometime next week.

Can’t wait for it in the mail? You can upload the picture from your computer use their direct order service.

Poloppo Even if you don’t have a child at home, this would be a great gift idea for any child who is old enough to draw. The ideas are endless. The best part: A portion of Poloppo’s revenues is donated to an art education support program for children around the world. And they have a blog.

Exclusively for SMM readers… Poloppo is offering you a 15% discount. Use promotional code SMM. The offer is good until Nov. 14, 2009. So go now… right now.

SMM was not paid by Poloppo to feature their products or services on this site.

A friend of mine referred me to Bloggled last year and I have been a customer ever since. Although I have yet to have a problem with losing information on my site or have my site deleted, I don’t want to risk the chance. As of right now, Bloggled can backup unlimited Blogger (Google) and Twitter accounts you own. And they backup up to 10 versions of it, so if something gets erased, you can always retrieve it from their site. The backup is done automatically on a weekly basis. You don’t even have to think about it.

I love the fact that crafting is not only for women. However, if you want something cutsie, you’ll have to make it yourself. If you leave it to the guys, they’ll make crafts like barrel monsters, DIY solar lamps, cannibalistic seed table, and a bike table. Dude Craft is a site that should inspire all the guys out there to be more crafty in their own way.

Find color themes, match a base color, create your own color themes from an image, see the colors others in the community are creating. This would be the source for anything color – painting, designing, sewing, photography.
